Almost a year ago, we published a list of the ten worst parent fails from MyBadParent.com. In retrospect, how can we claim to say which parenting fails are the worst, when there are so many to choose from?

Why play favorites with the parents who store their toddler in a glorified window planter on one of the higher floors of a high-rise apartment building, when there are so many qualified parents who can play Leaf Blower G-Force Face with the best of them?

It’s really not fair to choose and rank these gloriously bad parents, so we’re releasing a few more examples of bad parenting, all of which are worthy of honorable mention at the very least.

In fairness, the ground was just so inconveniently low.

Any self-respecting bad parent has a crapload of kid leashes for trips on the town, to the McDonald’s, or to the zoo. How the hell else are you going to know where the kid is at all times without a leash?

And what if you forget the leash? Oh, sure, you could hold his hand. Right. If you’re trying to raise a pansy, that is. I suppose you think the kid should have a hug every once in a while, too.

Stick the bastard between your knees! It’s an efficient way to hold your kid when you’re trying to snap a picture of your other kid getting his head chewed off by a camel.

Ha ha ha, headless kid. Oh, my. Phew. *Tear.*

Some acts of bad parenting are a bit more subtle than others. Rather than subjecting their children to obviously direct dangers like leaf blower face, knee suffocation, and camel destruction, some parents take an indirect route to wrecking their kids.

Such parents require a keener eye for detail on the part of the bad parenting critics. As experts on the topic, we at This Blog Rules submit for your consideration the following family photo.

Photo taken June, 2011.

The discerning viewer will note the eloquently insane look on the father’s face; the subtly drug-suggestive lasers in the background signifying a coke high to end all coke highs; and of course the immaculately maintained mullets, which have been scientifically proven to cause a deadly mixture of business and party. All of these elements combine to form a truly and insidiously bad set of parents indeed.

But humans have a long way to go before they can expect to measure up to, say, the animal kingdom, in terms of complete apparent parental ineptitude. When it comes to subtlety, nothing beats a well-timed elephant dump on baby elephant’s head.

Well played, animals. Well played.

This Blog Rules usually doesn’t engage in activism (we’re a humor/cool art/entertainment blog), but Congress may be about to do something horrible. On Wednesday, Congress could vote to create America’s first Internet censorship system, which would allow the government to block Americans from visiting any website with content that the government doesn’t like. This would annihilate Internet freedom as we know it in America, making us no different than China, Syria, or [insert your totalitarian regime of choice here] when it comes to how we treat our Internet companies and Internet users. The bill, known as the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA–which translates to “garbage” in Swedish ironically–is backed by major media companies like Viacom and Disney and has a great deal of support in Congress, meaning that it likely will pass through the House…unless we stop it. The bill has several nightmarish qualities to it. Let’s cover them in bullet point form:

–It would become a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison, to stream copyrighted work online without a license, even if you are a noncommercial user. Singing a popular rock song on youtube for instance, would now be a felony. That means that youtubers like Ricky Ficarelli would be committing a felony each time they upload a video, unless they want to pay more than $2,500 in licensing fees.

–The government would be given license to force Internet service providers to block websites if the sites contain links to material that infringes on copyright. So, if the government wanted, it could force an ISP to block say, Facebook, just because a couple of users posted links to copyright infringing material on their Facebook walls.

–Only a judge’s signature would be required to force financial institutions and ad networks to stop doing business with websites deemed to be “rogue.”

Hey, is it just me or does SOPA smell like it violates the due process clause of the constitution? It doesn’t require someone to go to court and prove through a trial that a website is illegally hosting content. Instead, it immediately places the burden on the accused to prove that they are not illegally hosting the content. So, yes, SOPA effectively throws the due process clause of the constitution out the window.

It also throws Internet security out the window. Stewart Baker, the former policy director of the Department of Homeland Security, wrote that SOPA would “do great damage to Internet security,” and Sandia National Laboratories, which is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy, wrote a letter to Congress in which it notes that SOPA would 1.) not be effective and 2.) damage U.S. cybersecurity. In a nutshell, the proposed law would leave Internet users more susceptible to cyberattacks, malicious hacking, and identity theft.

SOPA would be highly detrimental to the U.S. economy because entrepreneurs would have a disincentive to create Internet-based businesses. Why start a company if it can be sued out of existence or blocked by an ISP without due process of law?

So, what can we do to make sure this vile legislation doesn’t make it to the Senate? First, tweet about this post and spread it on Facebook and Google Plus. We need to inform as many people as we can about the horrors of the bill. Then, use the widget below to call your Congressman and tell them why you think SOPA is deeply flawed (if you don’t live in the U.S., you can also use this widget to petition the state department). After you put in your information, you will be supplied with a series of talking points, and you’ll be given your Congressman’s phone number.

If the widget above isn’t showing up, you can visit AmericanCensorship.org.

We must all do our part to preserve the sanctity of the Internet. Act now; we don’t have much time.

By Will Paoletto

Oh, and check out this video about how SOPA and Protect IP (the Senate version of the bill) wrecks the net:

Incredible news for all the fans of the world’s most famous young wizard – soon you’ll be able to set your foot in the original Great Hall where Harry and his friends used to dine, and have the unforgettable experience of visiting the place where all the magic happened. Literally.

On March 31, 2012, the “Making of Harry Potter” tour will be open to visitors, offering 150,000 square feet of original sets and props from the movies. It will be built on the original studio site where all eight Harry Potter movies were filmed, 20 miles from London.

The beauty of the place is in its details – the creators of the sets really made an effort to make them look as realistic as possible. As the actors say, it really feels like another world rather than just a movie set.

If you want to book a visit, you might have to challenge other fans to a game of quidditch, because the tickets for the first month of tours have already sold out.

Check out a miniature-sized robot version of Harry Potter here.

They say that God sees all, and now all can see inside of his house. Well, at least inside of a fully see-through church in Belgium.

The artists who came up with this interesting idea are young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, collaborating under the name of Gijs Van Vaerenbergh.

The project, called “Reading between the lines,” is a church located in Borgloon, Belgium, made out of horizontal plates stacked on top of each other in a manner that makes the whole object completely see-through.

It doesn’t represent a church in a classical way, since its function is not yet defined, but it is quite a visual experiment and a reflection on the potential artistic reuse of vacant churches in that area.

This is not the first church-related project that these two architects have worked on. They also made an upside-down dome inside of the St Michiel Church in Leuven.

Unless you’ve been living on Mars for the last 50 years, you’ve most likely seen a story or two about crop circles and their possibly extra terrestrial origin. That’s how people at NASA came up with the original idea to celebrate their milestones and contributions to the world by hiring a cornfield maze design company (these days you can hire a company to do pretty much anything) called “The MAiZE” to design seven mazes that depict significant dates and achievements of NASA.

The mazes are educational in nature and open to public, with numerous NASA-related easter eggs hidden throughout the maze. You can vote for the best design on Space Farm 7′s official website and enter to win a tour of the Kennedy Space Center. You can also win lunch with an astronaut.

Speaking of people expressing their artistic creativity on an extra large scale, check out how Japanese farmers use rice fields as canvas.
