The 10 Greatest Action Movies of the 1980s

August 23, 2012 By Vernon Gadson 1 Comment

Last Friday saw the theatrical release of action-packed blockbuster “The Expendables 2,” the star-studded follow-up to the equally star-studded 2010 box office smash. Directed by Simon West of “Con Air” fame and starring such no-nonsense macho men as Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the newly released old-school action throwback proudly pays tribute to the beloved template of the ‘80s action movie – blood, pecs, testosterone and all that jazz. But here’s a question: what are the ten greatest action flicks of the 1980s? Why, let’s find out! [Read more…]

25 Stunning Alternate Movie Posters

May 30, 2012 By Vernon Gadson 8 Comments

A semi-recent trend to pop up in the geek-ridden terrain of the internet movie blog is that of the alternate movie poster: basically, an amateurly produced piece of artwork intended to pose as marketing material for a full-length feature. Effectively kick-started by the sublime works of Austin-based company Mondo, the trend has ultimately stretched to the four corners of the earth, with movie-loving artists the world over designing and presenting their very own alternative posters to the ones displayed at one time or another inside a theatre near you.

Ranging from the clever to the ingenious, the simple to the intricate, the classic to the contemporary, and the funny to the utterly spell-binding, alternate movie posters really can prove that sometimes an amateur’s work can be better than a professional’s, as you shall see in the 25 stunning examples assembled below. The Top 10 Alien Characters of the Big Screen

May 25, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Today marks the release of “Men in Black III,” the sci-fi action comedy sequel that sees Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones returning as alien-hunting Agents J and K for the second time. Also, in two weeks, we will be treated with Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” the highly anticipated prequel to his 1979 sci-fi horror masterpiece “Alien.” To celebrate, I’m taking a look at the ten greatest alien characters ever to feature on the big-screen, be they vicious monsters, quirky visitors or conquering invaders. Whatever they may be and whatever their intentions, they’ve all got one thing in common: they’re outta this world. [Read more…]

Ten Hollywood Has-Beens Who Deserve a Comeback

March 5, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

As the age-old saying goes, what goes up must come down; the ten individuals listed below certainly know this. These ten actors are Hollywood ex-starlets whose once-glimmering careers have taken quite a tumble over the last few years or so, be this from bad role choices, box-office blunders or personal problems. They’re also actors whom I firmly believe should be awarded with the Mickey Rourke/Robert Downey, Jr. treatment, i.e. a shining comeback.

So, scroll down, take a look and see if you think any of these washed-up has-beens deserve to be placed back in the spotlight as I personally think they should be. I should probably note that they’re assembled in alphabetical order of surname, and not in order of washed-up-iness. [Read more…]

Top 5 James Bond Villains

January 16, 2012 By Vernon Gadson 1 Comment

James Bond is cool. We know he is and we love him for it. But Bond’s gadgets and suave sex appeal (if you’re into that sort of thing) are not the only reasons for the franchise’s fan base and longevity over the past decades. It is the villain, the rival, the nemesis of Mr. Bond – and his continued distinction and rogue tactics – that has brought the books and the films to the fore of franchising. But who have been Bond’s greatest adversaries? [Read more…]
