3 Actors Who Suffered Radical Changes to Rock Their Roles

February 19, 2014 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

With the recent Dallas Buyers Club movie and the success it had reported, people remembered that not only Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey had to suffer drastic changes to make their characters plausible, credible and outstanding, but in their careers, many other superstars chose sometimes difficult roles that imposed physical transformations such as loosing weight, gaining weight, change of facial features and so on. History of cinema remembers such radical changes as the courage of some actors that went beyond their talent and defied their own bodies to get that character right. Some of these transformations and the actors’ interpretations also led to such powerful characters in memorable movies that can be considered acts of pure genius. Not a long time ago, Total Film Magazine made a photo gallery with cinema’s 50 most spectacular actors’ physical changes, but we picked only three of them because they were monumental, to say the least and should be honored properly. Let’s see the three actors who suffered radical changes to rock their roles.

3. Ellen Burstyn – Requiem For A Dream

We chose her not only because in 1999 this movie shook the core of everybody who saw it, but because it had a young Jared Leto in it, a man whose role transformation pales in comparison to that of his movie partner Ellen Burstyn. A woman under the horrific influence of drugs ends up looking like a ghost from a more modern horror flick and the genius of this transformation is that the movies shows you Ellen’s radical changes in a progressive matter, which makes things even more terrible. It is mind blowing and nerve shattering to see how a woman can decompose and become a walking dead due to drugs and Ellen’s powerful role is still haunting after so many years. For this part, she is still considered one of those actors who got robbed of an Oscar Award.

2. Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler

Why this actor and why this movie? Well, if you remember gorgeous hot stud Mikey Rourke from the ancient 9 and 1/2 Weeks or Wild Orchid and if you followed his life until more contemporary times, you know everybody bashed him around for ending up looking like some white trash with no future, and alcohol had a part to play too in his natural radical transformation. The man was mocked in the press so many years in a row, at some point it seemed that a talented and famous actor like him would never recover. He got fat and negligent and he looked wasted most of the times. And then, The Wrestler hit the cinemas and all detractors had to shut up. Not only that he displayed a body many young men would envy, but he made such an unforgettable role in such a powerful movie, he managed to redeem himself for all his past sins. Not to mention long blonde hair.

1. Charlize Theron – Monster

Among all the actors who who suffered radical changes to rock their roles, Charlize Theron’s interpretation of famous female serial killer Eileen Wuornos was perhaps the most dramatic one. Other female actresses gained some pounds for their characters, Renee Zellweger and her Bridget Jones, Milla Kunis who lost a lot of weight to end up “skin and bones” for her role in the Black Swan, Natalie Portman who virtually starved to death and survived mind blowing physical training to deliver the Black Swan to us, and so many more. But Theron’s transformation was dramatic to the core and nobody could saw that coming. The beautiful, ingenue blonde with perfect skin and sparkling eyes delivered a monster in its true sense, as she gave up eyebrows, she had the face of a thousand sins, she wore prosthetic yellow teeth, she got… bigger, not fatter and whomever saw her on screen and remembered her in Sweet November was shocked to the core. She wasn’t the same person and rumors say that after that movie, she lost something of her beauty.

Perhaps there are even more than 50 actors who who suffered radical changes to rock their roles, but the list conceived by Total Film is a good place to start thinking about the real sacrifice some actors have to make, the real drama behind a part, the real challenges they have to go through not only in front of the camera, but behind them, starving or stuffing up with greasy food, becoming other people, trying to live to the expectations, stepping beyond the job and becoming one with the character.

Famous Little People With Huge Luck in Tall Women

February 10, 2014 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

According to the National Institute of Health, dwarfism refers to a person with a height of 4 feet or under, while there are over 200 genetic forms of dwarfism exist, with achondroplasia being one of the most common forms of this illness, “which results in an average-sized trunk, shortened arms and legs and an enlarged head“. There are many people in this world presenting one form or another of dwarfism and if you are thinking famous and badass Peter Dinklage, then you are right, today we are going to talk about famous little people with huge luck in tall women and striking movie careers in Hollywood.

Verne Troyer

Verne is famous all around the world for his personification of concentrated pure evil Mini-Me from the Austin Powers movies, but you also spotted the big man in business in movies like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone or The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Small sized but huge personality, Verne won the heart of former Playboy bunny Playboy Genevieve Gallen and married her. Among the most famous little people with huge luck in tall women, Verne is also known for his acts of bravery when he gets a little tipsy, not to mention his name is associated with wild parties and bad behavior.

Danny Woodburn

You know he is an one – man show and a special breed of entertainer only by looking at his resume, comprising the movie industry, television, stage and live shows. You may probably remember him best in Seinfeld (one of Kramer’s special friends), Mirror Mirror, Conan, Death to Smoochy or Employee of the Month. This superstar is also the lucky husband of Amy Buchwald, a woman twice his height, but their relationship seems to work just great.

Gary Coleman

You can’t have a list of little people with huge luck in tall women in Hollywood without mentioning late Gary Coleman, an actor quite famous in his youth, a man quite troubled in his adult years and the victim of a nonsensical house accident that took him away from us back in 2010. According to IMDB, Gary was THE child TV star of the late 1970s and early 1980s and while his fame faded along the years, he was lucky enough to marry Shannon Price in 2007.

Hervé Villechaize

This actor is no longer with us, unfortunately, but he was one of the most lucky ones when it came to tall hot women to have a relationship with. Hervé’s name is probably best known from James Bond’s movie The Man with the Golden Gun, TV series Fantasy Island or Two Moon Junction. He was married to Camille Hagen and had a long term relationship with Kathy Self, yet another gorgeous actress.

Peter Dinklage

He must be the most famous Imp in the history of cinema and television, as Peter is not only one of the most beloved characters in the Game of Thrones series, but a man with an outstanding career, personality and taste in women. Before becoming an awarded and world – famous actor for his unique interpretation of G. R. R. Martin’s Tyrion Lannister, Peter had a good history with theater and the film industry too. Titles like The Station Agent, Escape Artists or Knights of Badassdom may be familiar to you, but for all it’s worth, our beloved Imp will bring us joy with his part in X-Men: Days of Future Past. But let’s see how lucky he is in the women’s department, and if you take a look at his wife Erica Schmidt – a theater director – you will realize that Peter is a very lucky man both personally and professionally.

If you know other famous little people with huge luck in tall women, please let us know! We are certain that love doesn’t care about genetic mutations or illnesses, and if we take a look at little angry Jackass Jason “Wee Man”, who is a bad boy in his private life just as he is in front of the camera, we also understand that sometime, it’s the size of the attitude that matters and not that of the man’s.

We Lost Them To Drugs. 5 Actors Who Died On An Overdose

February 7, 2014 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

With the news of Philip Seymour Hoffman dying from a heroine overdose circulating with the speed of light, we face again the pain of losing yet another talented actor to drugs, pills, over the counter medication and overdose. Why do these things happen? How can an Oscar Award winning superstar die at 46 and get found with a needle and heroin bags by his side? We all found out that he had an addiction history and we all know these things just don’t go away by themselves so easily. But how cruel can fate be to kidnap from among us incredibly talented people? Were their destinies written? Did they bring their demise to themselves by acting irresponsibly? We may never know the answers to this, but all we can say is that Hoffman wasn’t the only one. To honor great actors who died on an overdose, we will take a look back in history and see other names that got lost to us in the favor of drugs.

1. Heath Ledger

He died too young? Too soon? Too early in his career? After looking pretty and managing to impress us with a few roles, especially the one in Brokeback Mountain, A Knight’s Tale or the lighter 10 things I hate about you, Heath managed to leave the entire world with its jaw dropped after playing the role of his life and the role that brought him his death: The Joker. The monumental, unforgettable Joker. A part which would have propelled Heath to the stars and which would have opened any door in Hollywood for any part he would have liked to receive. And yet, at only 28 years old, he was found dead in a hotel room for what it was called a “mix” of medication. Was it the pills or the Joker who killed Keith? We may never know, but among the actors who died on an overdose, he left us with the most shocking void ever.

2. Cory Monteith

Glee was never the same without him and the world was left an emptier, darker place. We lost Cory to a terrible combination of alcohol and heroine and he, just like Keith, were living their glory years.

3. Robert Pastorelli

If you are thinking that his name doesn’t ring any bell to you, it somehow should. He may not have been a star the size of Philip Seymour Hoffman or Heath Ledger at least, but you surely saw him in famous movies such as Michael with John Travolta, Eraser, Miami Vice, Dances with Wolves or some episodes of Cracker: Mind over Murder TV series. He died of a heroine overdose at the age of 49 years old.

4. John Belushi

The ruthless claws of drugs reached the Belushi family in 1982, when John, Jim Belushi’s brother, passed away due to a powerful combination of drugs and alcohol in a hotel room in Los Angeles. He was partying with other two cinema superstars and friends Robin Williams ?i Robert De Niro and chose to end the night in the company of a woman later found to be a drug dealer. John never made it to the next morning and cocaine, heroin and alcohol were mentioned related to his death. The woman was punished by the law, but this was a small compensation for the loss of John.

5. River Pheonix

This young rebel had himself a promising career in the entertainment industry, but he is also among the actors who died on an overdose, at the incredible age of 23 years old. Joaquin Phoenix’s brother died in 1993 when his life and his professional path were just blooming. He was supposed to perform on stage and before that, he stopped to take a “speedball”, the killer combination between cocaine and heroine that is responsible for many less famous deaths, but equally painful. He suffered a heart attack, although used to substance consumption but the ambulance and the doctors that rushed to his aid couldn’t save his life.

This world lost a lot of talented people to accidents and alcohol abuse. We lost musicians, actors and public figures and humanity lost brothers, husbands or best friends. In the memory of Philip Seymour Hoffman and all the actors who died on an overdose, we should enjoy their creations and make their legacy known.

True Bromance: 5 Actors Couples Who Make Very Close Friends

December 20, 2013 By Fred Mitchell 1 Comment

If you are at least a bit curious about celebrities personal lives (and this is not about paparazzi style interest in the latest divorce or the future cheating adventure) you may have wondered a few times what do these people do in their spare time, except for showing up in the news for all sorts of sordid reasons? Who are they friends with? Who are they spending time with? What are their hobbies?

Of course, if you are young, hot and famous, the media probably will be interested more in who you’re dating than who is your best buddy (and occasionally follow you in the park while you have a hot – dog), so this time we will take a look on some celebrity actors who share a true bromance with other actors and have what we might call a “normal” life which includes best friends and sports games buddies.

1. Ben Affleck & Matt Damon

Now this is not a new one. They are friends from childhood, attended college together (though in different grades, as Matt is two years older than Ben), shared an Oscar Award and international fame and glory and it seems that they are best buddies, while their true bromance looks like being strong and never fading. Of course, Matt Damon was spotted having couple dinners with Robert Downey, Jr. + One and while nobody managed to accurately trace back the beginning of their beautiful friendship, we just hope that Ben is not jealous.

2. Patrick Stewart And Ian McKellen

patrick stewart ian mckellen

Ahhh! Captain Picard and Gandalf are the Internet’s favorite true bromance, as these two are just hilarious and incredibly close. And when you see them wearing those hats, your faith in humanity must get restored in an instant. Apparently these two bundles of awesomeness and immortal friendship and love call each other “Sir”, while having no trouble in pulling pranks one on the other or sharing a few bags of garbage to prove that being together with your best buddy is more important that the landscape you found yourselves into.

3. George Clooney and Brad Pitt

george-clooney-brad-pitt

This is not that kind of close, tight, “call me every evening to tell me goodnight” type of relationship, but they do share a close relation and apparently, a lot of affection and the constant need to pull pranks on each other. George and Brad see each other as often as their schedules allow them to, but maybe this is that type of friendship when you don’t need to hold each other every day to still have that spark and keep the romance going for decades.

4. Great Gatsby and Spiderman: True Bromance for 25 years

leo di caprio tobey maguire

Of course we are talking abut Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, two actors who not so long ago shared the silver screen in Leo’s Great Gatsby, but who also share a personal story, as they know each other for 25 years. They met at an audition and starting then, they came a long way to fame and fortune, only to share that special relationship only guys can have: chat about basketball and look to each other for advice, while Leo seem to play the “awesome uncle” to Tobey’s kids.

5. Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy

cumberbatch mcavoy

The U.K. media knows this even better than us, these two share quite the friendship, to the extent that Cumberbatch, England’s sex symbol and one of the hottest, most talented actors of his generation declared that his friend James McAvoy is far better looking and even “gorgeous on screen.” Ah, a guy’s honesty when complimenting another guy… priceles…

We also heard that Ed Norton and Mark Ruffalo share more than a Incredible Hulk costume, they also share a great friendship. So wasn’t it odd to have Mark take over the Hulk and turn it into a smashing hit? How did Ed feel about this? Intriguing… However, If you have knowledge of other examples of true bromance, don’t be shy in sharing, we always love a good story.

5 Popular Actors You Might Remember From The X Files. Or Not

December 17, 2013 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

If you’d ask me what is my number one TV show of all times, I would say “The X Files” without blinking or thinking that I managed to grow up a lot since then. I would say “The X Files” not only because it shaped the way I see television shows even today, but because it still confirms a theory I’ve been willing to share with anybody willing to listen: everybody played in the X Files, everybody had at least one guest appearance and a lot of them started out their TV or silver screen careers with an X Files episode. What am I talking about? I am talking about some very popular actors who made an appearance in the X Files you might remember seeing there and who are now famous, or at least on their way to stardom.

Compiling lists of such actors is not a world – premiere, as others have done it as well, and the waters have been stirred again with the fabulous Breaking Bad series which turned Bryan Cranston into a god. Did you know that Vince Gilligan chose Cranston because he was impressed with his performance back in 1998 in the X Files Season 6, Episode 2 – Drive? Of course you knew, everybody does! Seeing how so many contemporary stars seem to have been related one way or the other with the iconic nineties show, I will present you with my favorite five actors you might remember from the X files, just to remind everybody that this particular show rocked the ages back then and if you didn’t see it, you should give it a try.

1. Tony Shalhoub – Mr. Monk as a Paranoid Scientist

tony shalhoub

Mr. Monk is heavily disregarded when people start making lists about popular actors who started out in the X Files or guest – starred in some episode or blessed the series with their already famous presence (see Burt Reynolds). But even if Tony didn’t actually begin his career in the X Files, I am sure many people who saw him starting with the 2000s screamed, just like me, pointing out at the TV: I told you everybody played in the X Files. I very much like him now, but I will never forget his paranoid and quirky character in Season 2, Episode 23 – Soft Light.

2. James Franco – So young then, so famous now

james franco

Now this one you know, if not for 127 Hours, at least for the more recent This is the End. But did you pay attention to Cop Number 2 in Season 8, Episode 8 – Surekill? He was there, alright and I swear to God I recognized him years after when I saw 127 Hours.

3. Mark Pellegrino – One of the actors you might remember from the X Files? Probably not

Mark Pellegrino

Admit it, you love him! If not because he confused the soul out of you with his character in Lost (Jacob, the mighty and powerful), at least because he is the world’s favorite Lucifer (in Supernatural, evidently). But this intriguing Lucifer also starred in Season 7, Episode 3 – Hungry in 1999, as a freak of nature who fed on human brains. I am not sure this part shaped his future career as a charming villain, but this X Files episode is considered as one of the very best in the entire Season 7. Mark might have helped a lot.

4. Ryan Reynolds – Turbo-ing his career since 1996

Ryan Reynolds

Of course you know him! Who doesn’t? Other people making a similar list of actors you might remember from the X Files made an interesting point: Ryan may be the biggest name on the list. Before his short appearance in Season 3, Episode 13 – Syzygy, Ryan had a few parts, but boy did he bloom in the years to come! OK, the Green Lantern thing may have not been his smartest career choice, but Deadpool, people! In the X Files, however, she lived shortly, as the two main characters female psychos ended his life brutally, but Reynolds legacy is still powerful in the minds of the X Files obsessed fans. Me, for instance.

5. Shia LaBeouf – The child who turned into a sex symbol

Shia LaBeouf

Season 7, Episode 6 – The Goldberg Variation. Shia plays a dying boy who, unknowingly, sets the main character on an impossible quest. Shia’s short appearance may have not been so spectacular to remember, but it still proves my theory that everybody played in the X Files and jumped from there.

Of course there are many other actors you might remember from the X Files: Seth Green, Danny Trejo, Terry O’Quinn, (who showed up in the show and in the first X Files movie playing different characters each time), the immortal Al Bundy, Michael Emerson and so on and so forth. Actually, they are so many, you might want to consider setting up a 9 Seasons X Files marathon to see them all. Which I do once in two years, but again, I’m with the obsessed crowd.
