5 Times Celebrities Nailed Their Halloween Costume

October 30, 2015 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

When you’re a famous entertainment industry celebrity it gets even harder to impress people with your Halloween costume, because they expect you to be out of this world on a day to day basis. I mean, hey, sometimes they dress-up as you!

So when a celebrity does decide to show-up costumed for Halloween, the pressure is higher and the task at hand more arduous than when Hercules fought the mythical Hydra. Because his Hydra didn’t have millions of heads as the figurative hydra of fans has.

Everything must be perfect to the tiniest detail, both regarding the clothing items that make up the costume itself and the attitude of the wearer, who must project the vibe of whatever he/she costumed as. The fact that we’re talking about actors and singers who are used to the stage and shifting their image, does help, granted.

But the fact remains that it’s no easy task to have your every action, including a fun fooling around on a special night like Halloween, scrutinized by countless avid eyes.

Which makes the 5 times celebrities nailed their Halloween costume rightfully impressive. And I do mean nailed it! Credit where credit is due.

1. Ed Sheeran – Austin Powers

5 times celebrities nailed their Halloween costume - Ed Sheeran

They’re both British. But that’s about all they have in common. To go from acclaimed pop-folk singer (Sheeran) to woman-crazed, overly-confident despite being ridiculous, time displaced hippie spy is surely no easy task. Especially when Austin Powers practically defines the term flamboyant even when not moving a muscle. But Ed pulled it off in 2014, before a show. Yes, he proceeded to play in costume.

2. Beyonce Knowles – Storm

Beyonce Knowles made one of the 5 times celebrities nailed their Halloween costume happen.

Another popular singer, this time the transformation was towards a super-heroine, the equally popular Storm from X-men. Come to think about it, as the super-heroine of many young African-American girls and a positive storm whenever she goes on stage, it kinda fits as a metaphor. Anyway, on October 25 this year, at Ciara’s birthday party, which was Halloween themed in anticipation of the holiday, Beyonce struck everyone into amazement. With lightning that is, as Storm.

3. Guy Ritchie & Son – Heisenberg & Jesse Pinkman

The list of 5 times celebrities nailed their Halloween costume includes Guy Ritchie and son.

While people would have expected (and probably dissed) film director Guy Ritchie to break some people’s will and/or bodies as a charismatic English mobster like those in the famous “Lock, stock and two smoking barrels” movie shot under his guidance, not many expected him to break out even badder and pull off such a good impersonation of “Breaking Bad”‘s protagonist Heisenberg and his sidekick Jesse Pinkman in 2014 at the UNICEF UK Halloween Ball, London. And with his son as Jesse, no less. His cool, casual appreciation of his colleagues’ work, the directors of the series, is also worth noting in an industry sometimes marked by petty feuds.

4. Iggy Azalea – Cruella De Vil

5 times celebrities nailed their Halloween costume - Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea cruel? Hard to say without actually hanging out with her. But she doesn’t seem like the Dalmatian torturing kind. Or a hag with a veneer of civilization. Which is why her appearance as one of Disney’s most popular villain’s (and several generations of dog loving children’s bitter nemesis) was eye-catching at Vevo’s Halloween party in 2013. She sure looks the part. Including bringing her own Dalmation along. We can only hope that looks were all there was to it and it wasn’t the last night the poor creature was seen.

5.  Rihanna – Raphael

The list of 5 times celebrities nailed their Halloween costume includes Rihanna

If you think there’s an incongruity in Hawaiian born rebel Rihanna going Galapagos turtle, think again. Galapagos turtle that is. As in, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (assuming they were Galapagos turtles to begin with, which seems to be the case), to be more exact. Which Rihanna did when she showed up as Raphael, one of the four famous Ninja Turtles. And to explain why there’s no incompatibility between Rihanna and Raphael, a quote from Wikipedia describing the latter: “The team’s bad boy, Raphael wears a dark red mask and wields a pair of sai. He is physically very strong, has an aggressive nature, and seldom hesitates to throw the first punch. He is often depicted with a New York accent. His personality can be fierce and sarcastic, and oftentimes delivers deadpan humor. He is intensely loyal to his brothers and sensei.” Yup, sounds legit.

Easy Game Of Thrones Halloween Costumes

October 26, 2015 By Theresa Carrion Leave a Comment

Some Game of Thrones Halloween costumes ideas.

Yes, yes, you’ve heard it before, but brace yourselves anyway, Halloween is coming. And as Game of Thrones is currently more popular than milk at a cat pub-crawl or Willy Wonka’s chocolate for curiously addicted kids, it’s safe to assume that you might just have to think of some Game of Thrones Halloween costumes to wear.

Whether you’ll be the one to lure your friends into Westeros by hosting a GoT party, or whether you get sucked into it almost against your will (hey, it’s been known to happen), it doesn’t matter. The end result is that you’ll have to get your game on (of thrones, of course) and not let any of those up-starts out-do you.

There’s literally an avalanche of ready-to-buy Game of Thrones Halloween costumes, meaning a Daenerys Targaryen costume, Jon Snow costume, Jaime Lannister costume, Margaery Tyrell costume, Robb Stark costume or just about any GoT costume can be yours fast, even delivered to your door, if you have the money for it.

But, apart from the money required, there is a down-side to buying your costume. Namely, that everyone can and will do so, to save time and trouble thinking about what to do/wear. So you might end up discovering someone else with the same stock and bland version that you’re wearing.

Of course, it would be best if everybody could make their own Game of Thrones Halloween costumes. As high-fidelity as possible to the series.

However, if you’re not a die-hard cosplay expert or you simply don’t have the time to make your own elaborate Game of Thrones Khaleesi costume, fit for wearing on the series’ set among the recording cameras, that augments your soon to be world-renowned acting brilliance (which I know you’ve dreamed of at least once), don’t worry.

There are easy, minimum effort Game of Thrones Halloween costumes solutions that you can go for. And some of them are even witty and subtle, which will earn you favor with your Tyrion dressed, tall as hell, hulking geek friend who will appreciate your display of intelligence and oddball courage.

(Warning: Some spoilers ahead).

1. Witty Bastard

One of the easy Game of Thrones Halloween costumes has to do with a contract.

For example, you can take a white t-shirt, then a black marker (or special clothes paint or whatever you feel works best for you) and draw a rectangle with the word SAG-AFTRA on the first, top half (or first line) and ONE UNION on the bottom half/second line (SAG-AFTRA ONE UNION in a rectangle is the logo for the Screen Actor’s Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). Then write: “THIS AGREEMENT, made on the 31st of October, 2015 between HBO Inc., hereinafter called ‘Producer’ and Kit Harrington, hereinafter known as ‘Performer’…”

Now comes the fun part. If you think Jon Snow’s not dead and will return for season 6 (or is dead, but will return for season 6, wink wink), you can continue the above paragraph with “… attests to the extension of the original agreement between parties, for an additional term of: 1 season, commencing upon the expiration of the original term.” (of course, regarding the number of seasons, you can take your pick: 1, 3, 27…).

But. If you don’t think he’s coming back and is dead for good, you can simply leave the first paragraph as it is, alone, with suspension marks and just draw a diagonal red line over your whole t-shirt, to signify that the contract is terminated. You can even tear your t-shirt a bit to make it more dramatic.

2. Mellisandre’s Shadow Assassin

Game of Thrones Halloween costumes - Melissandre's Assassin spandex suit.

This one’s reeeeeeal easy, though considerably creepy. And I don’t mean that in the horror way, but in the hinting-at-intriguing-sexual-preferences, stalker, sort of way. Still, you’ve been warned so, if you still wanna do it, here’s how. Buy a black spandex full body suit (you’ll manage to find one; remember the above? intriguing. sexual. preferences).

Then, all you have to do is … smoke a lot. Like in the 3 packs per half hour range, which will probably kill you, so on second thought, don’t! Or if you really wanna go hardcore, tie a battery-powered smoke dispenser to your back (is there such a thing?). Which… might kill you if it suffers a malfunction or if you fall or something, so this might not be a good idea either. Perhaps you should forget about the smoke all-together and just get a plastic knife, act all assassin-y and trust in your friends’ imagination.

3. George R. R. Martin

George R. R. Martin can be one of the easy Game of Thrones Halloween costumes

Suspenders, shirt, sailor cap, beard. And you get to have the Game of Thrones costume to rule all Game of Thrones Halloween costumes. How hard can it be? Of course, there is the concern that the other party-goers will all stab you with blunt spoons until you succumb and croak like their favorite character that you mercilessly killed on a whim. But, hey, dontcha wanna live dangerously on Halloween?

4. Valar Morghulis

And speaking of that favorite character, a real easy get-up is to wear dirt-brown clothes and a green hat/head gear (or paint your hair green). Then figure out a way to tie a cross or a plastic/paper tombstone to your head and draw a skeleton (or a stick figure) in a tomb (or rectangle) on your chest and belly. Then write “Your favorite GoT character” above it. Done. You’ve simultaneously managed to complete your Halloween costume and guarantee the emotional breakdown of (at least) one of your friends. Or you can just take the old sheet-as-a-ghost act and write “Your favorite GoT character” on it. The principle remains the same.

5. Lazy badassery

I saved for last the absolute minimum-effort thing you can do. Just go however you like. No costume preparation at all. When your friends are hurt and dismayed that you didn’t deem it important to dignify them with a reciprocal involvement in their great initiative, simply smile at the most vocal of them and tell him her: “A man/a woman is wrong. A Faceless Man is many faced.”

Then watch admiration fill them as they realize they’ve just been served by none other than Jaqen H’ghar (among many other identities). If necessary, allay their final doubts by taking out a coin and twirling it about. You can even buy the a GoT coin replica from some places if you want to go the extra mile.

Oh and in the same vein of humor and subtlety, you can then stroll over to the pork dish and say: “Ah, yes. King Robert’s slayer. A man thinks a slice would be nice.”

Your Young Robert Baratheon attired buddy in the corner will either protest or chuckle heartily.

Top 10 Halloween Costume Ideas

September 18, 2012 By This Blog Rules Guest 1 Comment

Halloween Costumes

September begins and school kids and adults alike skip to planning for the next fun holiday – Halloween.  A quick online glance at the new trends for Halloween costumes indicates that you may well see a good number of last year’s Angry Birds, back again for a repeat (and with a better costume).  Also on the up and coming list, Avengers costumes, Merida (Disney’s Brave), and new additions to the Monster’s High costume selection.

2012 Halloween Costume Trends

Here are our best guesses for what to expect in 2012 Halloween Costume Trends

1.  Dress up as Obama/Romney political posers. Obama Mask

This happens every four years where parents take it upon themselves to dress their kids as a political character in order to “campaign” door to door as they trick or treat.  It can be cute.  Or just weird.  And it can definitely be annoying.  Even if you don’t see many of these political costumes out and about, you’ll notice them for sure, and much like the presidential election, it could be scary.

2.  The Avengers Halloween Costumes.

As mentioned above, this one is just too easy.  Kids will be dressing up as the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and so on and so forth.  Even the women can get in the action with the Avengers Black Widow Costume.  It’s easy. And looks pretty good.

3. Angry Birds Costume.

Last year was for the birds, with a lot of home made Angry Bird costumes, but few in the stores.  This means there may be some latent, repressed birders out there willing to don the costume.  Yellow and red mostly (click here for the Angry Birds Red Costume), and available for boys and girls.

4.  Disney Princess | Disney Brave Merida Costume.

This one never gets old, and this year we have Disney’s Merida the Brave Costume out and about for sale.  Very cute and in a number of sizes.  It would be cute for the big sister, especially if you can convince a few younger siblings to dress up as the bratty bears/brothers.

5. Batman Themed Halloween Costume.

There are likely going to be a number of  Batman Begins Costumes and Catwoman Costumes out and about, especially at the adult parties this year.   Sexy Catwoman costumes abound. . .

6. Dress up as London Olympics Medal Winners.

Options abound as to what you might want to wear – speedos, gymnastics outfits, and tracksuits, are just some of the options.  Throw a handmade gold medal around your neck and your an Olympian.

7. Adult Fifty Shades of Grey Costume.

Dress up as a clueless college student and/or a ruggedly handsome millionaire.   Grab some handcuffs, and you’re fully costumed as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. This one is adult-only.

8. Hunger Games for Halloween.

Put on a frayed black outfit (remember, you’re poor), brown leather jacket and grab a bow and arrow for a prop and you’re all set to be Katniss Everdeen (don’t forget to braid your hair!)

9. Pregnant Snookie Costume

Jersey up your hair, spray on some fake tan, grab a pillow and dress up as a pregnant Snookie.

10. Dress up as Twilight characters Bella/Edward OR Kristen Stewart/Robert Pattinson

Dress up as a, angsty and remorseful Kristen Stewart (all black outfit and sad face)?  Or a pregnant, glowing, Bella.  Even better, you can go as Vampiric Edward or rebound Pattinson.  There must be a Pattinson mask out there somewhere.  Of course, either way, you are only slightly less of a Twihard than the YouTube fan who sobbed out her devastation at Kristen’s cheating ways.

An Abbreviated History of Trick or Treating: The Good, The Bad, and the Incredibly Weird

October 31, 2011 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

It’s an indelible Halloween tradition: the children of the neighborhood all dressing up in elaborate costumes purchased from the local Halloween specialty shop (or, if you were poor, your costume was “homemade”) and beating on doors, demanding candy lest they unleash their fury on whatever poor sucker gives them apples instead of good ole fashioned American candy bars.

If someone put this in your bag, you knew they were a Communist spy.
