Top 10 Theories about the Next Avengers Movie

July 5, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Part of the fun of watching a movie of a TV show these days is coming up with all sorts of fan theories and placing bets on which ones are going to come true. In a sense, however, these kinds of theories tend to ruin the immersion by bringing a certain level of predictability to the table. You just can’t win, though. Our primal desire to be able to shout out, “I called it!” when that one thing happens is just too much to resist. Now that the next Avengers movie is coming up ahead soon-ish, it’s not safe from all the speculations either.

Out of all them, there are some that just sound too juicy and amazing for us not to wish they will actually come true. Here are the Top 10 Theories about the Next Avengers Movie.

#1 Captain America’s Early Demise

Fans of the comics are thoroughly familiar with the saddening conclusion to the Civil War story arc, where Steve Rogers lies lifelessly on the ground after crossing paths with Crossbones and a brainwashed Sharon Carter. This theory suggests the crazy, but shocking, possibility that this scene will be recreated at the start of Infinity War and will trigger the rest of the events.

#2 Thanos Will Reunite Them

There isn’t really anything crazy or off the hook about this theory, which might just mean that it will become a reality in the next Avengers movie. After being separated at the end of Captain America: Civil War, it’s likely that the only way for the team to assemble again will be through the impending doom coming with Thanos.

#3 Return of Red Skull

What supports this theory is the fact that he met his demise at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger after coming in contact with an Infinity Stone. The thing is, though, that we never actually saw him die. Could he have been transported somewhere else instead?

#4 Captain Marvel Will be the Link

The link between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, to be precise. Given that her solo movie is due to be released in-between the two parts of Infinity War, it’s not difficult to determine she could play a big role. Some fans theorize she’ll be the director of S.W.O.R.D, the space version of S.H.I.E.L.D, and that she will be the bridge between the Guardians and the Avengers.

#5 Thanos Will Resurrect Villains

All of the villains we’ve seen get absorbed or otherwise annihilated by an Infinity Stone might return in the next Avengers movie according to this theory. The line-up of possible returns include the aforementioned Red Skull, Malekith, Ronan, and Ultron himself.

#6 Race for the Infinity Stones

The confirmation that there are, in fact, two Infinity Gauntlets led fans to speculate that the next Avengers movie will give us a race where the forces of good and evil are rushing to collect the Infinity Stones. This leads to the possibility of a Stone VS Stone conclusion, which is as exciting as it gets.

#7 Superhero Genocide by the End of Part I

The Marvel universe is huge and filled with incredible superheroes. Given how both Infinity War movies will feature 67 characters spanned across them, it almost looks like it’s about time they’ll start making some cuts. This theory assumes it will be half of the Avengers biting the dust.

#8 Loki will Die for Thor

Loki is, by far, the most popular villain the MCU has given us, so it’s almost a given that he’ll return to the next Avengers movie. Surprisingly, some fans theorize this will be the last of him, as he will finally complete the villain – anti-hero – hero transition by sacrificing himself for his brother.

#9 A Terrigen Bomb Will Go Off

It would certainly explain why they have chosen to place the Inhumans movie at the end of phase three for apparently no reason. This theory brings the possibility of the Terrigen Mist being released as a result of an attempt to annihilate Thanos, which will give the titular Inhumans their powers.

#10 The Hulk is the Key Player

Nothing is more speculation-worthy than the ending of a story. Some people assume that it would make sense for the Hulk to be the one to take down Thanos, given how he’s the only truly invincible Avenger. A god-like battle between two titans in the next Avengers movie? We’re so down for it!

Villains We Want In The Marvel Spider-Man Reboot

May 28, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

With Civil War having recently hit theaters (and receiving overall really positive reviews while at it too), it’s time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to flip the page on a new chapter. And, boy, what a chapter it is. Spider-Man is the character who received the most movie adaptations in such a short time span. Merely a decade ago, Sam Raimi would give us the first interpretation, which would later become a trilogy in its rightful sense. Unfortunately, any possible sequels were postponed due to financial reasons. Only a few years later, Sony gave us The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel.

And now, even less time passed between adaptations before it was decided that it was time for yet another reboot. This time, however, the project is in Marvel’s hands, where it should have always been. Needless to say, the Marvel has a track record for pulling movies that were average to good at their worst, so the expectations bar is raised yay high. Its take on everyone’s favorite web crawler is coming in 2017, featuring Tom Holland as the leading character Peter Parker. Here are the awesome Villains We Want In The Marvel Spider-Man Reboot.

#1 Venom

Marvel Spider-Man Reboot - Venom

Source

Yes, Venom made an appearance in the third installment of Sam Raimi’s trilogy, but it was far from being satisfying. The character of Eddie Brock was a bit off, the actor didn’t really fit the bill, and when Venom actually came into play, we were 15 minutes away from the end of the movie. He was rather a Venom-pretender cameo than the proper thing. As a result, we certainly speak for everyone when we say that an entire movie dedicated to the frightening symbiotic villain would really lift a boulder off the fans’ chests.

#2 Carnage

Marvel Spider-Man Reboot - Carnage

Source

And since we’re talking about psychotic spider-like characters, we can’t cross Carnage off this list. A late addition to Spider-Man’s universe, he is the perfect example that when something’s bad, it can go even worse. Spawned from Venom and attacked to a serial killer, Carnage’s insane power and complete detachment and lack of empathy made him so overwhelming that it forced Peter’s hand into an alliance with Venom to stop him.

#3 Jackal

Marvel Spider-Man Reboot - Jackal

Source

Admittedly, the Jackal’s overly-complicated cloning storyline would be fairly difficult to translate to the big screen, but there is more to Jackal than his obsession of repeatedly cloning Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. He is incredibly intelligent. His brains would make for a great potential showdown and we’re not even counting the possibility of him introducing either (or both) of the Scarlet Spiders into the MCU.

#4 Rhino

Marvel Spider-Man Reboot - Rhino

Source

We were first teased with Rhino’s big screen debut in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Or, to put it more honestly, at the very end of the movie. Since he was supposed to play a big part in the third installment, we never actually got to see this “all brawls, no brain” archetype in proper action. This would make for a perfect chance for Marvel to give us a character completely different from the villains say Spidey battle in both series.

#5 Mysterio

Marvel Spider-Man Reboot - Mysterio

Source

An odd choice, some may say, but Mysterio would make for a mandatory inclusion in the MCU should the Sinister Six make an appearance and an excellent standalone villain if the odds end up not in our favor. Armed with nothing but a knack for dramatics, a talent to manufacture special effects, and a stubbornness to die, Mysterio has proven to be a real obstacle in Spider-Man’s way over the years.

#6 Kingpin

Marvel Spider-Man Reboot - Kingpin

Source

Daredevil fans probably collectively gasped. This is because Kingpin is a well-known troublemaker in Matt Murdock’s way, but he couldn’t seem to be able to keep his nose out of Spider-Man’s business either. Resembling at first glance the archetype of a mob leader commanding others while sitting in his chair and evilly stroking a cat, we later discover that Kingpin is pretty much 99.9% muscle and he can put up quite the physical fight.

6 Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics

March 14, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

When Marvel announced in 2013 the listing for its upcoming movies, everyone was hyped to hear about Captain America: Civil War. It’s practically impossible to be a fan of the comic books and not have heard about the infamous storyline that the film is going to be founded on. The Civil War plotline was launched in 2006, with no other arc living up to the impact it had on the Marvel universe. Our heroes were no longer dealing with villains that threatened to render Earth to a pile of ashes and dust. Instead, the conflict was internal, gnawing at the morality of those who suddenly had different points of view when it came to humanity’s defense.

After the release of the latest trailer and with the premiere of the third Captain America installment quickly approaching, it’s time to put the movie and comics side by side. From what we’ve gathered so far, here are 6 Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics.

1. The Catalyst

The Catalyst - Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics

Every fire needs some sparks before being ignited. Civil War is no different, although the reason why superheroes are now forced to pick sides is different in the movie than in the comics.

In the comics, at fault is a rather obscure group of heroes called The New Warriors. They naively try to defeat Nitro, a villain that proved to be way beyond their powers. He causes an explosion so big that it, unfortunately, takes the lives of roughly 600 innocent civilians. Needless to say, the government was furious and decided that the superhero’s way of dealing with villains was damaging the cities and population too much. Therefore, they needed to find a way to ensure that superheroes’ powers would be kept in check. In other words, they would be (unfairly) held accountable for all the damage caused by the villains.

On the other hand, the movies chose to tie the reasoning behind the superhero registration with the damage left behind by the Avengers’ missions. From the destruction caused to New York and to the untoward side effects succeeding Ultron’s defeat in Sokovia, it all became too much for the government to handle.

2. The Characters

The Characters - Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics

One of the things that made Civil War such a memorable arc was the sheer scale of the event. However, for understandable reasons, it’s a factor that’s rather difficult to transfer on the big screen.

Essentially every single character in the comics gets involved in the conflict, one way or another. And it’s not just the heroes that get affected; villains are thrown into the mix too.

The Marvel cinematic universe is considerably more limited than the books, so to include all of the characters in a two-hour long film would be practically impossible. For starters, we won’t be seeing the Fantastic Four getting involved in the strife. Reed Richards was a pivotal player for the pro-registration side, relentlessly working alongside Tony Stark so their cause could emerge victoriously. But since FOX insists on keeping the rights to the team, we can be absolutely certain they won’t ever become a part of the MCU. Other big names that won’t participate in the Civil War will be Bruce Banner (Hulk) and Thor, who’s probably just busy preparing his upcoming installment, Thor: Ragnarok.

3. The Sides

The Sides - Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics

From the trailers and teasers shown, we’ve managed to get a clear look at the two opposing sides. Iron Man leads the pro-registration side, backed up by Black Widow, War Machine, Vision, and Black Panther (supposedly Spider-Man too). Captain America leads the anti-registration side, followed by Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and Ant-Man.

The teams aren’t very different from their comic counterparts, but there are indeed some changes. For starters, Vision was on Cap’s side in the comics. Black Panther was also in the anti-registration group since he wanted to leave his people out of the quarrel. In the trailers, however, he is shown to be by Tony’s side. Producers have said, though, that he is more of a wildcard, so we can expect the unexpected.

4. The Villains

The Villains - Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics

The government decided that those who opposed the Superhero Registration Act are too dangerous to be left to their own devices. Cap and his allies were declared public enemies and have started being actively hunted down.

Some of the most odious supervillains started working under the government, pretty happy with the opportunity to legally kill some superheroes. It made for a good plot point and a definite obstacle for Cap’s side that rendered the conflict more intense.

It doesn’t look like this scenario will be transmuted to the movie, though. And it’s, again, understandable. There are enough characters squeezed in a mere two-hour runtime as it is, adding villains would complicate things even further. Moreover, MCU’s villains are either too big (see Loki and Thanos), either forgettable, either dead.

5. Spider-Man’s Side

Spider-Man's Side - Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics

It seems like the other wildcard character in the movie is going to be Spider-Man, whose arrival to the Marvel cinematic universe has been long awaited. The latest trailer definitely made quite a fuss out of his climatic appearance right at the end. But what’s his role going to be, exactly?

In the comics, Peter Parker is squeezed in the middle of the conflict. He is more or less bribed by Tony to the pro-registration act and managed to shock all readers by publicly revealing his identity. Ultimately, Spider-Man’s morals clashed with the lengths to which Tony and Reed went to, and switched sides to Cap’s team.

One could say that this seems like the trajectory the MCU Spider-Man will take, but it’s not that likely. For starters, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is only sixteen years old, a big difference from the adult, married, mature Peter Parker in the comics. The circumstances are different and with this factor considered, Spider-Man might see the Civil War differently.

6. The Deaths

The Deaths - Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics

Arguably the most anticipated moment of the movie is the ending. More specifically, the imminent death of one of the characters. The streak of deaths in the comics is started by the New Warriors and then ends with the assassination of Captain America himself.

Producers have been teasing the death of one of the characters for a while now, and theories haven’t failed to surface. Many fingers point towards War Machine (who seems to be in a bad place in the trailer) while others believe the victim will be Scarlet Witch. Naturally, the outcome that many fear is that the movie will stay faithful to the comics and kill off Cap. Don’t worry too much about that, though, since Chris Evans is signed up for the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.

In the first two phases of Marvel movies, we were introduced to a set of brilliant characters, getting attached to many of them. With Civil War, it looks like our affinity towards one character or another is going to be tested, forcing us to also pick sides. The movie is going to come soon, and then we’ll be able to decide if these 6 Differences Between The Civil War Movie And Comics have been accurate.

Guesswork In The Complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe

October 13, 2015 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

Marvel Worldwide Inc. (under its parent company Marvel Entertainment, owned by Walt Disney) is the American company that publishes the Marvel comics. These comics flesh out the Marvel Universe, a fictional one in which the adventures of those superhero characters created and/or owned by Marvel take place. Heroes such as The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Spider-man, The Avengers, Iron Man etc.

It is worth noting that as the various comics were published it became clear that the Marvel Universe accepts the concept of a “multiverse”, meaning that the possibility for possible parallel plots in thousands of other universes exists for all stories. As such, the “original” universe, if you will, meaning that in which the main continuity takes place, has been identified as “Earth-616”.

guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe - Marvel logo

With us so far? Good. Because it gets a bit more complicated.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is the media franchise consisting of a series of superhero films set in the Marvel Universe. And Disney is ambitious, because it’s a pretty big series. (The competition from Warner Bros., with their DC comics based DC Extended Universe probably has something to do with it too).

It’s so big that it is broken up into phases (like a military campaign, you ask?).

Phase 1 lasted from 2008 to 2012 and is made up of the movies: “Iron Man” (2008), “The Incredible Hulk” (2008), “Iron Man 2” (2010), “Thor” (2011), “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) and “The Avengers” (2012).

Guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe involves Iron Man.

The Avengers feature are part of the guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic UniversePhase 2 started in 2013 with “Iron Man 3”. Then, until its conclusion in 2015, the following movies came out: “Thor The Dark World” (2013), “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014), “Guardians Of The Galaxy” (2014), “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” (2015) and “Ant-Man” (2015).

The guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe features Iron Man 3 as well.

Ant-Man is an element of the guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Regarding the future, due to the various changes in release dates quite recently announced (most recent on the 8th of October), it is yet unclear whether the movies announced are part of a single Phase 3 or whether Marvel plans a Phase 3 and a Phase 4.

What is clear is that Marvel has planned and announced movies set in the MCU until 2020. And judging by their most recent post, it would appear that Phase 3 extends from 2016 to 2020. So let’s assume that there is just a Phase 3 for the moment, until an official declaration clarifies things.

Anyway, it’s unimportant whether there are 2 phases or just 1. What is important is that among the movies announced until 2020 there are 3 of them whose title has not yet been released. But the movies themselves have been confirmed. So, the big hype now is all about those movies’ theme. Which superhero(es) will they present? What story.

A little guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe is in order.

Guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe? Captain America: Civil War is part of it.

Inhumans is talked about in the guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The movies whose titles have been confirmed are: “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Doctor Strange” (2016), “Guardians Of The Galaxy vol. 2” (2017), “Spider-man” (2017) – a reboot, “Thor: Ragnarock” (2017), “The Black Panther” (2018), “The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” (2018), “Ant-Man And The Wasp” (2018), “Captain Marvel” (2019), “The Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” (2019), “Inhumans” (2019).

Looking at the release year of movies for each phase we can see Disney has a penchant for patterns. To be more precise, the number of movies released in the same year, per each phase is as follows:

Phase 1:               2 – 1 – 2 – 1

Phase 2:               2 – 2 – 2

Phase 3:               2 – 3 – 3 – 3 – (3?)

With the last (3?) representing the 3 mysterious movies set to be released in 2020.

These patterns look like a thorough, thought-of marketing strategy, which seems to warm audiences to the MCU by starting Phase 1 strong with 2 movies, to keep them interested, then releasing 1 more the next year so as not to spam yet, but still keep them hooked. Then releasing two more the next year for a surge, then toning it down with just 1 movie “tease” in order to prepare Phase 2, which goes all the way with 2 movies/year.

Though Phase 2 has the same number of movies in it (6), it is more “intense”, as it is shorter than Phase 1 (which lasted 4 years), Phase 2 running for 3 years. And this build-up goes all the way to Phase 3 which, in the span of just 5 years will bring 14 movies to the public! More than double the number of movies Phase 1 had with just an extra year longer. Pretty good build-up, eh?

Guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe, Illuminati joke.

Of course, it could just be that it’s NOT a marketing strategy and is in fact an Illuminati scheme to take over the world! (Wait! I’m confused… From themselves? Since everyone knows they rule it … Maybe it’s some weird “Capture The Flag” style tournament they hold once in a while in which they pass the rule from one family to another… Whatever.).

Back to patterns, another predilection of Disney’s regarding the MCU, is doing things in threes. Each hero OR team of heroes centered story has three installments or is planned to have three installments. Best example? “Iron Man 1”, “Iron Man 2”, “Iron Man 3”. Robert Downey Jr.’s official declaration confirms beyond a doubt that there are no plans for a fourth one. The Captain America cycle was also confirmed to end with “Captain America: Civil War” by producer Kevin Feige.

And finally, the last clue we get is the pattern of sequels and “introductory” or “original” movies. Which is as follows:

Phase 1:               5 original / 1 sequel

Phase 2:               2 originals / 4 sequels

Phase 3:               5 originals / 6 sequels / 3 ???

Looks like the number of originals is set to grow each phase?

Anyway, in essence, because Iron Man has 3 installments and Captain America, Thor and The Avengers will also have 3 installments confirmed in Phase 3, the possible choices left for the three unannounced titles in this phase are: Hulk, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Spider-man, Doctor Strange, The Black Panther, Captain Marvel or Inhumans sequels, OR new detailed/original movies for other Marvel heroes (of which there are many).

Of the sequels, a Hulk one would encounter some legal difficulties as Universal has distribution rights, so that seems unlikely. And Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, The Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Inhumans have movies with release dates too close to 2020.

Guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe - Guardians of The Galaxy.

Therefore, the plausible choices for sequels seem to be those of: Guardians Of The Galaxy (almost certainly) and… Spider-man. As for the original/detailing installments, a Black Widow movie seems most plausible, a fact that even Feige declared that he would like to see happening.

So, what do you think about the guesswork performed and the conclusions reached? Leave a comment if you have a different reasoning oooor if you’ve managed to find the secret Illuminati message in the patterns.

As part of the guesswork in the complicated Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ben Stiller the Illuminati joke.
