10 Rare Historical Photos That You Might Not Have Seen

Some of these rare historical photos are bone-chilling, while others are glimmering with joy. The world is a terrifying, yet pleasant place. People have been killing themselves since man realized that he can use his fists to get what he wants. But at the same time, laughter and joy has fueled us, and brought humanity closer together. Technical advancements have made it possible for you to read my words, even though you are probably thousands of miles away, and civil rights movements marked our progress towards a better world for all.

When we, as humans, started taking photos, we learned that we not only can capture memories with a camera, we also capture the era’s soul and heart.

1. Buchenwald concentration camp guards

Rare historical photos of the Buchenwald concentration camp guards

After the Buchenwald concentration camp was liberated in 1945, the prisoners got their just revenge on some of the guards who tormented them day-in, and day-out.

Built in 1937 near Weimar, Germany, the Nazis plastered the entrance of the camp with a slogan meant to provoke existential anguish for whoever was not part of the Reich, and Hitler’s perfect aryan race. Written on the main entrance gate, Jedem das Seine means to each his own, literally, and figuratively everyone gets what he deserves.

It seems to me that these concentration camp guards didn’t get enough of what they deserved.

2. Audrey Hepburn and her deer

Rare historical photos of Audrey Hepburn with her deer

On a more lighter note, here we have Audrey Hepburn shopping for groceries along with her pet deer. The picture was taken in Beverly Hills, 1958, meaning that she was 29-years-old, and right at the beginning of her booming acting career.

Does anyone know what happened to her deer?

3. Kurt Cobain and his daughter, Frances

Rare historical photos of Kurt Cobain holding his daughter

The grunge icon, guitarist, vocalist and founding member of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain is known to have said that the best drug in the world is holding his daughter, Frances. Too bad that this wasn’t enough to trump his other addictions.

4. Muhammad Ali and The Beatles

Rare historical photos of Muhammad Ali and The Beatles

I’m not quite sure who was the bigger fan here.

Muhammad Ali is undoubtedly a big The Beatles fan, and I’m sure that he’s still listening to the occasional Abbey Road album, even at his respectful age of 74. But The Greatest and The Beatles didn’t really have a great start.

You see, the four legendary musicians were kind of annoyed waiting for Ali, who was running late for the photo-shoot. Yet, when the door burst open, and everyone met Ali’s charming laugh John, Paul, Ringo and George, all immediately fell in love with him and started giggling, forgetting about having to wait for the boxer to arrive.

The emblematic picture was taken in 1964.

5. Every soldier counts

Rare historical photos of warfare dogs

…even those who make barking sounds.

Dogs have been in warfare since ancient times. The United States even has a US War Dog Association that commemorates and respects our most beloved pets.

The picture above was taken in World War II, in Normandy of 1944.

6. The freedom of women is not a crime

Rare historical photos of the suffragist movement

The suffragist movement changed the highly-bigoted world that we used to live in. Can you image a time where women were seen inferior to men? Well, you surely can, because women are still discriminated today – not as much, thanks to the suffragist and feminist movement, but still, it’s an issue.

7. Tsar Nicholas II and his daughter, Anastasia

Rare historical photos of Tsar Nicholas II and his daughter Anastasia

Grand Duchess Anastasia, that is.

Her father, Tsar Nicholas II, is seen allowing his daughter to smoke. Some of you may see this as bad parenting, while others note that lung cancer clearly wasn’t the issue for Anastasia as her time on Earth was cut short due to, you know, the whole Romanov family being killed by the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin.

8. A young Queen Elizabeth II

Rare historical photos of Queen Elizabeth II

The picture was taken when she was 18-years-old, that puts the photo-shoot in 1944. Queen Elizabeth II is from House Windsor, a highly-reputable English House that has been ruling over England, and its Commonwealth regions, since 1952.

9. Titanic survivors

Rare historical photos of the Titanic survivors rescued by the Carpathia

The Titanic sank on April the 15th, 1912, halfway through its voyage. Over 1,500 people died that early morning when the ship hit an iceberg. The lucky few who managed to save themselves, were rescued, as seen in the picture above, by the Carpathia.

10. Anti Nazi demonstration in Berlin

Rare historical photos of an anti-nazi demonstration

It took place in 1932, when the Nazi party was beginning to gather more and more followers, with each passing day. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone who lived in Nazi Germany during WW II was evil. Not everyone agreed with concentration camps and killing minorities, and performing incredibly cruel acts, horrid tortures that stained our history.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

What would you choose between a sharp, beautiful photo portrait and an illustration? If you’re inclined to reach for the photo answer, you need to see these random portraits turned in illustrations. What happens when drop dead portraits get in the hands of a talented artist? Julio Cesar experimented with transforming photos into fun illustrations that will make you feel jealous he didn’t pick your Facebook profile photo. Cesar follows the lead of Hector Janse van Rensburg who chose fifty random Facebook profile photos and turned them into sloth paintings, as a metaphor for his depression. The Brazilian artist, however, has a cuter approach and an obvious draw towards pretty girls.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

Also known as MZ09, the Brazilian artist is a freelance illustrator with a deep passion for cartoony style. He gave up publicity and advertising so he could dedicate all his time to what he really loves doing: art. He has an impressive collection of illustrations and you can check out his original artwork on Deviantart, Facebook or Tumblr.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

His main source of inspiration are cartoons from the 80s and 90s. This transpires in every illustration he makes. Whether he starts from scratch or works around a real photograph, he makes sure to leave his fingerprint on the style of the artwork. You can notice above the photo vs the illustration. Cesar went ahead and enlarged the eyes of the girl for a real cartoonish feel. The elongated neck and fuller lips prove he pays attention to details and he’s not afraid to spend hours working on a project.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

Cesar has a knack for choosing the photos he decides to transform into illustrations. I doubt it’s a completely random process, since almost all of them have a playful undertone in their composition. To make his illustrations, Julio uses Easy Paint Tool SAI and also Photoshop for post production.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

I warned you his favorite subjects are pretty girls. Cesar confesses that at the beginning his creative process was a bit chaotic. Well, no one’s born knowing it all, Cesar. As he learned how to master the technique, he shifted back and forth between approaches until he found what best worked for him. Instead of getting knee deep in layers, now he first tackles the draft, adding the base colors and then the lights and shadings.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

As a self taught illustrator, the Brazilian artist finds inspiration and tips everywhere on the internet. His favorites are superheroes, but this project took him out of his comfort zone and made him experiment with different portraits, colors and techniques.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

From the bunch, the above set probably best illustrates his fondness for cartoons. The photo on the right undergoes a complete transformation. The eyes are enlarged, the doll eyelashes applied. Even the drinks get the cartoonish treatment and benefit from a face lift.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

What’s in store for Cesar’s fans? An actual store. MZ09 is shooting high for the stars and plans to open an online shop and sell t-shirts for all nerds and geeks out there. Come to think of it, I know a few people who’d like to wear a tee with their cartoon self painted on it.

Random Portraits Turned In Illustrations

Cesar doesn’t exclude the possibility of releasing an art book with his illustrations in the near future. He’s also flirting with the idea of a comic book, but that’s just brainstorming at the moment. Looking at his artwork, his attention to details and drive to create something unique, I think it’s safe to say he would succeed in anything he set out doing.

The 10 Best Optical Illusions in Photos

We love taking photos and we love optical illusions. Add these two things together, give them a shake and we have a recipe for some fantastic images that will make you scratch your head.

The Vintage Optical Illusion

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

If you thought that optical illusions were a modern thing then take a look at this classic. It is pretty simple but looks rather amazing.

The Floating on the Beach Illusion

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

It took me ages to work out what was really going on here. It looks for all the world like the woman is floating above the sand on some sort of magical flying carpet. Spoiler Alert: the shadow is the shadow of a flag.

The Plane Illusion

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

When this poor chap went to see a show of aerial prowess he presumably didn’t expect the planes to come flying out of his ears.

The Weird Legs Photo

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

I’m going to come clean here and admit that I have no idea what is going on here. I’m guessing that the colour of the guy’s shorts is causing the optical illusion but I just can’t be sure whose legs are which in this photo.

The Llama Illusion

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

This is a cool optical illusion of a llama putting his head in the perfect place at the right time. The next time I see one I’m going to try and recreate this exact same photo.

The Little Person Illusion

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

This is a clever photo, as it fools us into thinking that the guy in the chair is tiny. In fact, he’s a lot further away than he appears to be. I would quite like one of those chairs, I think.

The Which Way Is Up Illusion

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

This is a brilliantly weird photo. It was only when I noticed the bottle of water that I could be sure which way is up. I don’t know where this optical illusion photo was taken but I’m guessing that it is somewhere specially built to make it look like really confusing. Either that or some architect completely lost the plot.

Another Weird Legs Photo

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

This lady’s legs look really weird at first, don’t they? Again, it is colour of the side panels (or whatever they’re called) against the background that makes it such a great optical illusion. Just be careful about where you walk when you wear clothes like this.

The Fallen Head Illusion

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

This is another brilliant illusion that it takes a minute or two to understand. At first it genuinely looks as though someone’s head has seriously fallen off. Upon closer inspection, well, it still looks as though someone’s head has fallen off. Upon even closer inspection I’m still mightily confused but I can see a blonde head at the back that appears to belong to the woman with the bare back. That would mean that the loose head belongs to the person with the white t-shirt and is just strangely angled rather than floating about.

The Small Woman and Giant Pringles

Best Optical Illusions in Photos

Is this a small girl or a really giant pack of Pringles? The lack of perspective in places like salt plains can lead to incredibly creative pictures if you put some thought into it. In this case, it led to a fantastic optical illusion.

The 6 Most Poignant Michelle Obama Photos of All Time

Being the FLOTUS comes with a lot of responsibility (and, obviously, some privilege, too). No one knows this better right now than Michelle Obama. Still, with her intelligence, grace, sense of style, and inspirational outlook on life, Ms. Obama has been handling the chore impeccably for the past several years. That’s why we’ve decided to celebrate her today, with a small collection of the most poignant Michelle Obama photos of all time. Enjoy the candid, the stylish, the funny, and the thought-provoking pics in the gallery below!

6. Michelle Obama in the green Marchesa dress

This is one of the First Lady’s best fashion moments, as well as one of the most poignant Michelle Obama photos of all time – if for no other reason, then just for how radiant both her and her husband look. The two were stepping out in style for the evening, in order to attend the Kennedy Center Honors in 2013. That night, Michelle wore an acclaimed, regal Marchesa dress which brought out her natural good looks.

5. Michelle and her lovely daughters

The 2013 Presidential Inauguration was an amazing photo opportunity for everyone present on the scene – and, first and foremost, for the country’s number one family. For our list, we settled on this lovely photo of the Obama ladies, looking almost royal in their beautiful coats, as they arrived for the event. In case you care about designers, labels, and such, you might want to know that Sasha is wearing a periwinkle Peatrice coat by Kate Spade New York, Malia is wearing a coat from J. Crew, while the First Lady is sporting Thom Browne, with J. Crew gloves.

4. Michelle Obama with Barrack, back when they were dating

Check out the POTUS’s Christmas sweater! Get a load of the look on his face! We’re not exactly sure when this pic was snapped up, but it’s candid and endearing – not to mention the fact that Michelle looks great. By all accounts, it was taken when the couple was still dating, so it must be somewhere in the very early nineties (something like 1990 to 1992).

3. Michelle Obama’s second visit at the Buckingham Palace

This one is among the most poignant Michelle Obama photos out there, because it also speaks volumes of her evolution in style. In 2009, during her first visit at the British Royal Palace, Michelle wore a simple black sweater and skirt, which attracted criticism for being too simple. The second time around, though, she donned a gorgeous J. Mendel jacket, which cost almost $7,000! (PS: Yes, the stylish First Lady pays for all her clothes herself.)

2. Michelle Obama, new White House dog Sunny & the little girl

This photo of Michelle Obama is actually more endearing for what happened after it was snapped. The story goes as follows: in early December, the FLOTUS has a traditional dinner, where she invites kids to decorate Christmas ornaments. This year, though, the new Obama dog Sunny got a bit overly excited upon meeting Ashtyn Gardner, this precious two year-old little girl from Mobile, Alabama. He jumped on her, the girl fell, and for a while there it looked like the situation would spiral out of control. At the end of the day, though, the girl got a hug from Michelle and it was all okay.

1. Michelle Obama & Stephanie Kyriazis revert the past

At the top of our list of poignant Michelle Obama photos stands this pic, snapped on May 16, 2014. In it, the FLOTUS stands with Stephanie Kyriazis, Chief of Interpretation and Education, at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, in Topeka, Kansas. The picture is actually a wonderful reminder of how far America has come, in terms of doing away with racial segregation and improving civil rights. Imagine that only five decades ago, Ms. Obama and the woman in front of her wouldn’t have been allowed to use the same bathroom!

The Best Travel Photos Ever Taken

One of the best things about travelling is the selection of photos you take. Or at least it should be. If you take the same sort of blurry, boring snaps as me then here are some travel photos which show us how it should be done.
