5 Worst Superheroes Ever Portrayed On Film

September 29, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

There is no such thing as a bad superhero or a good superhero. There are just concepts that are executed either badly or horribly. Aquaman has been regarded for quite some time as the laughing stock of DC. But that didn’t stop us all from getting really excited over Jason Momoa’s version in the upcoming Justice League. Likewise, can anyone believe that there is actually a way someone can mess up Batman, Spider-Man, or Superman? See? It’s all in the execution. Because of faulty execution, Hollywood has managed to give us some of the worst superheroes ever depicted on cinema.

In the spirit of heroic bravery, we’ll also carry on with name-calling, so we can all publicly shame the worst superheroes ever portrayed on film. Or, alternatively, we can dismiss them from canon and pretend they never happened in the first place.

#5 Green Lantern

Worst Superheroes

Green Lantern (2011), portrayed by Ryan Reynolds

Poor Ryan Reynolds just couldn’t catch a break, could he? All he wanted was a good superhero project to work on. Little did he know, Green Lantern wasn’t the way to go. The movie was campy, corny, awfully animated, and just poorly executed overall.

As a result, everything was downgraded, and Green Lantern was the one to join the Laughing Stock Corner alongside Aquaman.

#4 Supergirl

Supergirl

Supergirl (1984), portrayed by Helen Slater

Ah, there it is. That one oldie that can come off as horrible much more easily because of awful special effects. If only all problems with Supergirl boiled down to this one thing. The plot is a convulsed mess with no direction or any ounce of logic in it. It quickly jumps from a life-and-death planetary matter to high school drama dropped on us for no reason.

Then the over-the-top acting, the senseless character motivations, the misogynistic undertones, and the poor writing all come together to create this epically atrocious flick. Up to this day, it’s still all we were given by Hollywood in terms of Supergirl.

#3 Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider (2007) & Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), portrayed by Nicholas Cage

Admittedly, the first Ghost Rider wasn’t that much of a hot mess, though there were undoubtedly enough holes in this ship to sink it into the abyss as well. In fact, we reckon we only look at it with less judging eyes simply because of how much worse the sequel is in comparison.

But all in all, Ghost Rider, one of the superheroes with the coolest concepts around, ended up being one of the worst superheroes, at least as far as cinema depictions go. We’re not saying Nicholas Cage may have not been a brilliant casting choice, but… you know.

#2 Catwoman

Catwoman

Catwoman (2004), portrayed by Halle Berry

Catwoman is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero of all time, mostly because it technically has no excuse. It rolled around the corner about the same time Sam Raimi was making history with his Spider-Man trilogy, yet it completely failed on all levels.

Halle Berry’s Catwoman hardly even had anything to do with the DC counterpart, which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you make out of it. Even without drawing comparisons with other versions (Anne Hathaway or Michelle Pfeiffer), the 2004 Catwoman stands on her own as one of the worst superheroes of Hollywood.

#1 Deadpool

X-Men Origins

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), portrayed by Ryan Reynolds

If you saw “Deadpool” in the title, calm down. Unless your freak-out was of the “I can’t believe you even considered this atrocity Deadpool” sort. In which case, we agree! The Deadpool version given to us by the worst of X-Men films was beyond perplexing and offensive.

Not only did he not look anything like Wade Wilson, but he didn’t act even remotely in a similar fashion either. You know you’ve earned yourself one of the worst superheroes of cinema when you’ve sewn shut the mouth of the Merc with the Mouth.

Who Is The Strongest Superhero?

July 21, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Who is the Strongest Superhero Ever?

This question has been haunting us for a long time. And, to be honest, it will probably continue to do so. The reason for this is simple: there are no statistical ways to form an answer to this question, so everything is mostly opinion-based and highly subjective. We all know how well that goes down on the Internet. Who is the strongest superhero? Subjectively, plenty of people.

Who Is The Strongest Superhero?

But the most important aspect most of us seem to be eluding is that there is no way to properly analyze all of the known superheroes and consider it fair to compare them. When we ask “who is the strongest superhero,” this can refer to so many things. Which one is most likely to outlive them all? Who has the most impressive set of skills? Who has the biggest physical strength?

With all of these factors being taken into consideration, we’ve tried to line up a few possible contenders.

[tcb-script src=”https://app.involve.me/embed”][/tcb-script]

As a conclusion, it’s hard to determine one winner. Traditionally, Superman would be the best pick because he manages to balance really well the skills necessary to an indestructible hero. But his life would really be tough if he were to ever go on par with one of these other aforementioned characters.

How about we just make them all team up to defend us and call it a day?

Top 8 Best Superhero Video Games Released So Far

July 14, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Starting with the middle of the first decade of the 21st century, there has been a noticeable rise in popularity concerning superheroes. Long forgotten are the times when Superman was nothing but a laser-shooting alien goof wearing undies over his costume. These days, everything superhero related is put out there to show us that they mean serious business – starting with the achievements of the interconnected universe created by Marvel and ending with the array of superhero video games that keep us occupied in-between releases.

So, because they deserve just as much exposure and fame as comics and movies, we’ve decided to give superhero video games a chance to shine. Here are the Top 8 Best Superhero Video Games Released So Far.

#1 Batman: Arkham Knight

Despite the name of this entry, we are also considering the other installments in the series: Arkham City, Arkham Asylum, and Arkham Origins. The reason for this game’s insane popularity and critical success is shared with the explosion in quality provided by cinema. It showed that it means business. Arkham Knight enchanted us all with its graphics, gameplay, and the openness of the world.

#2 Spider-Man 2

For a very long time, Spider-Man 2 was considered to be on top of the list with the best superhero video games. It shares this honor with its movie counterpart, actually. The game was innovative through the vibes it transmitted, fueled by the openness of a world that made the feeling of swinging above Manhattan difficult to reproduce since.

#3 Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3

Fighting games are either a hit or a miss and, thankfully, Marvel VS Capcom 3 was the former. The game gives players the opportunity to form teams of three superheroes chosen from a varied roster. Then, they pit them against other superheroes, all of which have their unique set of moves.

#4 Infamous: Second Son

Superhero video games aren’t limited to the DC and Marvel icons we are all familiar with. Sometimes all we need is to step in the shoes of a powered character to have some fun. Infamous: Second Son was released in 2014 for the PS4 and it brings to the table all the goodies of a new generation open world adventure with superpowers.

#5 Freedom Force

Although this game was released in 2002, it manages to nicely hold up even today. It’s one of those superhero video games that want to take it a notch further than the typical fighting adventure, it’s a deeply strategic game with a lot of unique characters. Some people even dare to go as far as to call it an earlier version of everything we loved about Bioshock.

#6 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, released in 2006, represented the first step towards the goals that spawned the successful formula which helped the genre explode to new peaks of popularity today. It brought together numerous famous characters and let players evolve them to their best. It’s not just the array of hero choices that’s impressive, but the villains as well.

#7 Lego Marvel Superheroes

Legos are successful, superhero video games are successful – why not combine them both? This is what one game developer must have thought one day. Turning popular franchises and concepts into Lego-related games isn’t something novel or revolutionary but, time after time, it continues to prove to be successful.

#8 X-Men

No other parts are added to the title of this one. X-Men was released in the 90’s and it was one of the first superhero video games to cause waves of hype among fans. Released for the arcade, it brought people together around the consoles for a four-player co-op game that involved channeling unique (yet limited) powers in order to defend humanity against the array of Sentinels spawned to venture your way.

Top 10 Theories about the Next Avengers Movie

July 5, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Part of the fun of watching a movie of a TV show these days is coming up with all sorts of fan theories and placing bets on which ones are going to come true. In a sense, however, these kinds of theories tend to ruin the immersion by bringing a certain level of predictability to the table. You just can’t win, though. Our primal desire to be able to shout out, “I called it!” when that one thing happens is just too much to resist. Now that the next Avengers movie is coming up ahead soon-ish, it’s not safe from all the speculations either.

Out of all them, there are some that just sound too juicy and amazing for us not to wish they will actually come true. Here are the Top 10 Theories about the Next Avengers Movie.

#1 Captain America’s Early Demise

Fans of the comics are thoroughly familiar with the saddening conclusion to the Civil War story arc, where Steve Rogers lies lifelessly on the ground after crossing paths with Crossbones and a brainwashed Sharon Carter. This theory suggests the crazy, but shocking, possibility that this scene will be recreated at the start of Infinity War and will trigger the rest of the events.

#2 Thanos Will Reunite Them

There isn’t really anything crazy or off the hook about this theory, which might just mean that it will become a reality in the next Avengers movie. After being separated at the end of Captain America: Civil War, it’s likely that the only way for the team to assemble again will be through the impending doom coming with Thanos.

#3 Return of Red Skull

What supports this theory is the fact that he met his demise at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger after coming in contact with an Infinity Stone. The thing is, though, that we never actually saw him die. Could he have been transported somewhere else instead?

#4 Captain Marvel Will be the Link

The link between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, to be precise. Given that her solo movie is due to be released in-between the two parts of Infinity War, it’s not difficult to determine she could play a big role. Some fans theorize she’ll be the director of S.W.O.R.D, the space version of S.H.I.E.L.D, and that she will be the bridge between the Guardians and the Avengers.

#5 Thanos Will Resurrect Villains

All of the villains we’ve seen get absorbed or otherwise annihilated by an Infinity Stone might return in the next Avengers movie according to this theory. The line-up of possible returns include the aforementioned Red Skull, Malekith, Ronan, and Ultron himself.

#6 Race for the Infinity Stones

The confirmation that there are, in fact, two Infinity Gauntlets led fans to speculate that the next Avengers movie will give us a race where the forces of good and evil are rushing to collect the Infinity Stones. This leads to the possibility of a Stone VS Stone conclusion, which is as exciting as it gets.

#7 Superhero Genocide by the End of Part I

The Marvel universe is huge and filled with incredible superheroes. Given how both Infinity War movies will feature 67 characters spanned across them, it almost looks like it’s about time they’ll start making some cuts. This theory assumes it will be half of the Avengers biting the dust.

#8 Loki will Die for Thor

Loki is, by far, the most popular villain the MCU has given us, so it’s almost a given that he’ll return to the next Avengers movie. Surprisingly, some fans theorize this will be the last of him, as he will finally complete the villain – anti-hero – hero transition by sacrificing himself for his brother.

#9 A Terrigen Bomb Will Go Off

It would certainly explain why they have chosen to place the Inhumans movie at the end of phase three for apparently no reason. This theory brings the possibility of the Terrigen Mist being released as a result of an attempt to annihilate Thanos, which will give the titular Inhumans their powers.

#10 The Hulk is the Key Player

Nothing is more speculation-worthy than the ending of a story. Some people assume that it would make sense for the Hulk to be the one to take down Thanos, given how he’s the only truly invincible Avenger. A god-like battle between two titans in the next Avengers movie? We’re so down for it!

Top 10 Typical Hero Characteristics

June 6, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Looking to create a traditional heroic archetype for your story? Then you must absolutely bless him or her with one of these hero characteristics that can be found in almost every protagonist that’s ever lived. Even though we all know that they say everybody is the hero of their own story, it’s safe to say that the task isn’t one that quite everybody can live up to. Get your pens out for this one. Be warned, though – you might be treading a cliché territory.

Hero Characteristics

Source

#1 Courage

Perhaps the most common of them all, the courage displayed by our story heroes only reinforces the fact that no protagonist who runs away from danger to cower in a corner can be called a hero. Even if this bravery isn’t represented by picking up a sword and marching towards your foes to slash them, courage in any kind of form is what sets these heroes apart in a world where cowardice is the easy route picked by many.

#2 Dead Parents

Remember, we’re talking about hero characteristics, not just traits. And if DC or Marvel heroes are anything to go by, we can all conclude that it’s unacceptable for our protagonists to be anything but tragic. Somehow, it seems like living parents are considered some sort of burden on the journey of our hero. Understandable, we suppose. Saving the world would be pretty difficult when you’re pestered to do the dishes.

#3 Heart of Gold

Of course, in order to be a hero, you need to be a good guy. This implies that the character needs to be in possession of a pretty strict moral compass that discourages, along with other things, murder and mayhem, but encourages mercy. A hero will always fight for the weak ones and wish to protect them.

#4 Honesty

The honesty of a hero is reflected in much more than the mere act of not lying about what happened to your homework. In fact, these are situations when lies might actually slip through. When being honest, a hero speaks truthful about their own wrongdoings and admits to their mistakes.

#5 Martyrdom

If there’s one thing that countless of forms of media have taught us, it’s that heroes aren’t afraid to toss their safety (and even lives) to the side for the sake of greater good. There are many heroes that are also martyrs, if not for the fact that we see so many of them ready to sacrifice themselves to save a population from impending doom.

#6 Humility

Let’s ignore Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne for a moment. Most heroes rise from nothing. They’ve either been poor or raised in dire conditions and, now, with their newfound calling, they’re able to save numerous lives without it getting to their head.

#7 Determination

A common trajectory for a traditional hero is to be faced with obstacles and hardships throughout their journey. Without a will of steel and determination, it’s impossible to overcome the challenges laid before you. Pick yourself no matter how many times you fail, that’s the motto of our heroes.

#8 Responsibility

“With great power, comes great…” You know the rest of it. Responsibility in a hero comes in many forms. However, in most cases, it’s forced upon the hero and it becomes a pivotal part in their personal development.

#9 Loyalty

Loyalty can come in several forms. Whether we’re talking about the fierce loyalty displayed for friends and the people they hold close or the faithfulness towards their own beliefs, there’s no denying that heroes are unshakeable in their attachment to a cause or person.

#10 Growth

Last but not least, heroes are always intended to be relatable. They manage to do so by being human and flawed and, in almost all instances, they grow throughout their journey and better themselves. Heroes are the people we wish we could be, and the fact that they learn from their flaws and mistakes makes them all the more relatable.
