The Greatest Time-Travel TV Series You Must Watch

May 19, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Don’t we all wish we could have a way to turn back time? Time-travel is a goal that humanity has been dreaming of since forever. Even when it was way more scientifically impossible for it to become a reality than it is now, everyone would have slept a little bit better if they knew they could turn the clock and fix their mistakes. As we have it, there are plenty of time-travel TV series out there which feature a lot of it or which are founded on this concept. Unfortunately, those who get caught up in this vortex end up in more trouble than it’s worth it. Here are The Greatest Time-Travel TV Series You Must Watch.

#1 Doctor Who

It would be no fair list without the most popular and longest-running sci-fi series of all time. Doctor Who features a lot of leaps back and forth in time and space, all curtsy to the handy feature of the TARDIS that transports the Doctor and his companions anywhere they want. You can start with the 2005 reboot or you can try to catch up first to the decades of runtime of the old series.

#2 Outlander

There are two kinds of time-travel TV series – there are those where the protagonists battle intergalactic hazards and monsters and there are those like Outlander. Based on a book series of the same name, this show starts with the simple concept of a 1945 nurse who gets zapped in 18th century Scotland. Although her struggle to pick between her husband in her time and her newfound Scottish love warn the viewer of a romance-filled story, Outlander will surprise you with its brutal lack of censorship.

#3 Primeval

In the case of this series, the ones doing the time-traveling are the foes that our heroes need to defend the Earth against. Primeval is a British sci-fi show that features a group of scientists-turned-defenders who travel about in search for anomalies in time and space that allow vile creatures to cross worlds. A five-season long series, Primeval is an excellent cross between Jurassic Park and Doctor Who and it features a lot of action to keep you engaged.

#4 Quantum Leap

One of the most renowned and appreciated time-travel TV series of all time, Quantum Leap is a show that flawlessly taps into how a journey to the past can change history. Physicist Sam Beckett is the protagonist of this adventure where he leaps from one person’s body to another throughout his lifetime in order to fix the various mistakes in their lives.

These occurrences leave a huge impact on history, as we get to witness Jacqueline Kennedy eluding death during JFK’s assassination among others. Quantum Leap has five seasons and they are all streamable on Hulu and Netflix.

#5 Legends of Tomorrow

A time-travel TV series that’s also full of superheroes and action?! Sign us up! DC’s Legends of Tomorrow showcase a team of misfit superheroes assembled for the purpose of leaping from one time period to another in order to stop the vile Vandal Savage from destroying the world. There are plenty of familiar faces that can be picked up on by DC loyalists and it works really well as a standalone show riddled with journeys through time.

#6 Continuum

Time-Travel TV Series: Continuum

We’ve had romances, superheroes, and intergalactic battles – now it’s time for some detective work too. Continuum is a Canadian sci-fi series that follows Kara Cameron, a police officer from the future who trades her current timeline for our present times.

She befriends the boy who would grow into the man who helped her make the leap and gets tangled in a corporatist conspiracy that gives her the choice of whether she wants to save herself or the world as well. And if you’re wondering about the “detective” part of the show, there will also be some intriguing murder investigations ensuring.

4 Costly TV Series HBO Produced

November 10, 2015 By Theresa Carrion Leave a Comment

Many an aspiring screenwriter or producer has had his hopes dashed when the TV series he/she proposed was not deemed worth the money required to be invested in it.

And many a TV series have withered and died after their plug was pulled by executives who didn’t see the return on investments being on par with the costs. In spite of some such series being amazing according to the considerable numbers of fans that swear by it (looking at you “Firefly” and wiping away a tear).

But making a TV series, especially an ambitious one is indeed a costly process. So, it’s natural and common sense that the ones that cough out the money have the last word and influence the evolution of such a project.

And, to be fair, there have been many instances as well in which investors agreed to pour a ton of money into series that turned out to be spectacular.

As well as some cases in which the result was… not so great. But at least, the effort was made.

So take a look below at 4 costly TV series HBO produced, despite the humongous sums involved which would make you think any investor would have ran in panic and chosen some other project. They didn’t and the results are these series.

1. Rome

4 costly TV series HBO produced - Rome

Let’s start with one of the sob stories similar to “Firefly”. Not because of the subject matter, although the intense, brutal and sometimes gory life of ancient Rome as depicted in the series might be too much for some.

But because this masterpiece in the true sense of the word was cancelled after only two seasons. Yeah, that’s one more than “Firefly” but who’s counting?! (Sob).

Point is that “Rome” was so well made and paid such an attention to detail that it was and still is the most immersive and entrancing portrayal of that period of history ever made. There’s nothing that comes to mind that could be considered poorly done with this series: from the character development and dialogue, to the creative and smart mingling of historical characters with fictional ones, costumes, set, pacing, you name it.

And it’s not just my opinion because, wanna know the real kicker? The show was nominated for 2 Golden Globes, won 7 Emmys and was a critical success for the ages. All of this happening after its cancellation. Along with its massive sales on DVD.

So why, oh, why did HBO cancel it? Because it such dedication as described above and the results that come with it are only possibly with a hefty price. 10 million $ per episode, to be exact.

I mean, let’s put it this way, when the set you painstakingly built to be historically accurate develops its own ecosystem complete with rats and bugs (as the producers confirmed happened with “Rome”), you can safely say you’re invested in the project and costs tend to go up.

2. Deadwood

One of the 4 costly TV series HBO produced is Deadwood

Another huge success after its cancellation, “Deadwood”‘s story is tied to that of “Rome”, because they overlapped for a while (“Deadwood” 2004-2006; “Rome” 2005-2007). Which serves to explain why HBO was pretty panicky at the time of its decision to cancel “Deadwood” after its third season: they were already stressed about the “Rome”‘s costs and Deadwood’s 4.5 million $/episode were adding to their concerns.

Because at the time, they had two ongoing series that HBO didn’t really know would be successful or not.

Guess what? Just like in Rome’s case, “Deadwood” really DID turn into a success (albeit, granted, not at the same astronomic level as Rome), with many fans disappointed that the plot was left hanging and begging for a final season to wrap things up.

Because unlike Rome, in which the writers admirably managed to increase the pace without breaking the story and still manage to tie things up in a satisfactory manner (hey, history really did go on after Caesar, so they just had to step back and say “That’s all, folks!”), “Deadwood” ends in blatant breaking manner. You know, akin to hanging on the proverbial cliff.

It’s due to this undeserving ending that fans are still hoping that someone will decide to pick up this Western period drama and produce the final season. With the same great actors, of course!

3. Boardwalk Empire

The list of 4 costly TV series HBO produced includes Boardwalk Empire

Luckily, HBO learns from its (marketing/financial) mistakes. As exemplified by the fact that another expensive show produced by the network, “Boardwalk Empire”, was allowed to continue to its final 5th seasons, without the writers having to make any major cuts or changes to their plans, allowing them to conclude the show as they wanted.

“Boardwalk Empire” is a drama centered on Atlantic City in the 1920s, from the beginning of the Prohibition Era, which is even depicted in the pilot episode from the viewpoint of both politicians and common people.

And speaking of the pilot episode, it cost 18 million $ to make, because they reconstructed the entire Atlantic City Boardwalk as it was back then.

After the pilot, the cost per episode dropped to a more “modest” 5 million $ per episode.

But without sacrificing anything with regard to historical accuracy, including epoch cars, clothes etc. All the glamour of the Roaring Twenties on screen.

4. Game of Thrones

4 costly TV series HBO produced - Game Of Thrones

The popular series (ha! huge understatement) surely needs no description.

So I’ll just mention that, on average, a “Game of Thrones” episode costs around 6 million $, with costs projected to increase in future seasons.

And I say on average, because “special” episodes, like “Blackwater” and “The Dance with Dragons”, featuring battle scenes cost way more.

The pilot itself cost 10 million $, but for the same reasons as that of “Boardwalk Empire” did: the sets. Building each of the impressive locations where the parts of the story take place cost a lot.

Apart from the sets, the usual costs per each episode revolve around the actors’ salaries, costumes (of which everyone has to have one, including extras), unique locations and some special effects now and then.

The 6 Best Historical Series of All Time

May 17, 2014 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

As chocolate or being next to the people we love would tickle just the right pleasure centers in our brains, so do good books, great movies and unforgettable series. So much so that we convince ourselves to “watch just one more episode” before going to bed, regardless of how tired we may be or how much work there is to be done the following day. And there are such shows that create binge-like behavior in even the most well-organized of us, when we devour season upon season of perfectly crafted art. Some of the best such historical series are listed below, so if you haven’t gotten around to watching them, we’d be betting our hats you will in the near future.

1. The Sopranos

1

Although countless contenders have appeared as years went by, it’s unanimously accepted that The Sopranos is the best TV Drama of all time. The story revolves around Tony Soprano, an Italian mobster living with his family in New-Jersey and the difficulties he must face in order to achieve the perfect balance between his criminal organization and his family. Even though it may seem that the series used the recurrent mobster motive (as seen in The Godfather or Goodfellas), it manage to surprise viewers with a unique character (a mass-murderer who was afraid of his wife, his therapist and his mother as well as a concerned father), realism and a viewpoint that is clearly not that of a script editor.

2. Boardwalk Empire

11

Another history based series is Boardwalk Empire, a period drama set in the Prohibition Era. Based on Enoch L. Johnson, a political figure who was the undisputed boss that controlled Atlantic City, the series has received unending acclaim not just because of Steve Buscemi’s marvelous performance, but also because of the visual style and base in historical figures. This Golden Globe winner series is certainly worth your time.

3. Vikings

111

This Canadian-Irish historical drama has been gathering attention since its debut on the 3rd of March 2013 on History Channel. The series is inspired by the life of Ragnar Lothbrok, a notorious Danish hero that starts off as a farmer but rises to fame after several successful raids into England. Filmed in Ireland, it shows the wild and wooly nature of the Norse sagas and creates characters so enthralling it’s almost impossible to stop watching.

4. The Tudors

THE TUDORS - Season 4

At the time of its premiere (back in April 2007), The Tudors was the highest-rated Showtime drama to debut in the last three years. Centered around king Henry the VIII of England, this historical drama will exceed your expectations with breathtaking costumes, sets, fiery acting and exquisite music. Although many critics disapproved the historical inaccuracies, the series has more than redeemed itself with scorchingly authentic performances that make it more than worth your time.

5. The Borgias

borgias_wallpaper_1280x1024

When ShowTime sets off to create a historical drama, it seems they go to any lengths  in order to ensure they produce only the best of art. As with The Tudors, The Borgias was another such series that was set around prominent European historical figures-this time the Borgia family and Pope Alexander VI played by Jeremy Irons. Critics described the show as being “almost addictively entertaining”  and while it was met with so much enthusiasm, ShowTime decided to cancel the show after 3 seasons due to enormous production costs.

6. Spartacus

1a

Such a countdown wouldn’t have been complete without one of the best historical series to date- Spartacus. This New Zeeland historical drama aired on Starz television surprised viewers at first with its raw, visceral scenes including sex and violence. The context behind these scenes was however much more profound. Based on the story of the gladiator Spartacus, the series had to deal with more than just renewal fear. The leading actor, Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and finally died as a result of his illness, so the series was continued with Liam McIntyre as Spartacus in seasons two and three. The plot is full of twists, the performances are only out staged by the athletic cast and the characters and relationships are so complex that you are missing out tremendously if you have not seen this series.

5 Popular Actors You Might Remember From The X Files. Or Not

December 17, 2013 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

If you’d ask me what is my number one TV show of all times, I would say “The X Files” without blinking or thinking that I managed to grow up a lot since then. I would say “The X Files” not only because it shaped the way I see television shows even today, but because it still confirms a theory I’ve been willing to share with anybody willing to listen: everybody played in the X Files, everybody had at least one guest appearance and a lot of them started out their TV or silver screen careers with an X Files episode. What am I talking about? I am talking about some very popular actors who made an appearance in the X Files you might remember seeing there and who are now famous, or at least on their way to stardom.

Compiling lists of such actors is not a world – premiere, as others have done it as well, and the waters have been stirred again with the fabulous Breaking Bad series which turned Bryan Cranston into a god. Did you know that Vince Gilligan chose Cranston because he was impressed with his performance back in 1998 in the X Files Season 6, Episode 2 – Drive? Of course you knew, everybody does! Seeing how so many contemporary stars seem to have been related one way or the other with the iconic nineties show, I will present you with my favorite five actors you might remember from the X files, just to remind everybody that this particular show rocked the ages back then and if you didn’t see it, you should give it a try.

1. Tony Shalhoub – Mr. Monk as a Paranoid Scientist

tony shalhoub

Mr. Monk is heavily disregarded when people start making lists about popular actors who started out in the X Files or guest – starred in some episode or blessed the series with their already famous presence (see Burt Reynolds). But even if Tony didn’t actually begin his career in the X Files, I am sure many people who saw him starting with the 2000s screamed, just like me, pointing out at the TV: I told you everybody played in the X Files. I very much like him now, but I will never forget his paranoid and quirky character in Season 2, Episode 23 – Soft Light.

2. James Franco – So young then, so famous now

james franco

Now this one you know, if not for 127 Hours, at least for the more recent This is the End. But did you pay attention to Cop Number 2 in Season 8, Episode 8 – Surekill? He was there, alright and I swear to God I recognized him years after when I saw 127 Hours.

3. Mark Pellegrino – One of the actors you might remember from the X Files? Probably not

Mark Pellegrino

Admit it, you love him! If not because he confused the soul out of you with his character in Lost (Jacob, the mighty and powerful), at least because he is the world’s favorite Lucifer (in Supernatural, evidently). But this intriguing Lucifer also starred in Season 7, Episode 3 – Hungry in 1999, as a freak of nature who fed on human brains. I am not sure this part shaped his future career as a charming villain, but this X Files episode is considered as one of the very best in the entire Season 7. Mark might have helped a lot.

4. Ryan Reynolds – Turbo-ing his career since 1996

Ryan Reynolds

Of course you know him! Who doesn’t? Other people making a similar list of actors you might remember from the X Files made an interesting point: Ryan may be the biggest name on the list. Before his short appearance in Season 3, Episode 13 – Syzygy, Ryan had a few parts, but boy did he bloom in the years to come! OK, the Green Lantern thing may have not been his smartest career choice, but Deadpool, people! In the X Files, however, she lived shortly, as the two main characters female psychos ended his life brutally, but Reynolds legacy is still powerful in the minds of the X Files obsessed fans. Me, for instance.

5. Shia LaBeouf – The child who turned into a sex symbol

Shia LaBeouf

Season 7, Episode 6 – The Goldberg Variation. Shia plays a dying boy who, unknowingly, sets the main character on an impossible quest. Shia’s short appearance may have not been so spectacular to remember, but it still proves my theory that everybody played in the X Files and jumped from there.

Of course there are many other actors you might remember from the X Files: Seth Green, Danny Trejo, Terry O’Quinn, (who showed up in the show and in the first X Files movie playing different characters each time), the immortal Al Bundy, Michael Emerson and so on and so forth. Actually, they are so many, you might want to consider setting up a 9 Seasons X Files marathon to see them all. Which I do once in two years, but again, I’m with the obsessed crowd.

Lost: Creating The Perfect Team

April 12, 2013 By This Blog Rules Guest Leave a Comment

What would happen if you were stuck on a “deserted”island with ten people from the cast of “Lost”. Who would you choose as a team to get you off the island before death came knocking? Think carefully about the traits that each person holds. Will it consist of Kate, the whining, but self serving vigilante? How about Rose? She is smart and caring. That could go a long way in a terrible situation. How about minor character Libby? She seems tough and understanding. Here is one scenario team that would get you out in a timely manner.

Main Team

(Leader)Lost Title Image

John Locke: Locke is a natural leader. A survivalist. Whether it be a gun or a knife, John practices his weapons training whenever he can. He is a strategist and masters maps and graphs. Although it seems like he doesn’t care, he does what’s best for his team at any cost. John also works well with a diversity of people. That matters in a time of crisis.
