Why Ross and Rachel Are Still Our Favorite Couple

March 21, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Friends is one of the most iconic TV shows of the 90’s, a series which has both given us ridiculously high standards for friendship and has made us care about our dear friends even more. While definitely an iconic comedy at core, Friends was more than that. Aside from the plenty humorous moments, it knew how to deliver moments of drama and heart-wrenching angst.

And the romance? Romance was a pivotal aspect of the story, of course, but no couple has toyed with our emotions the way Ross and Rachel have. Ever since we (and Rachel) found out about Ross’ more-than-amicable feelings for her, it’s been a constant rollercoaster with these two until the very end. Years later, their relationship still strongly holds up and here are the reasons why.

Lobsters

Ross and Rachel - Lobsters

Bringing up this iconic foreshadowing moment was inevitable. Phoebe may be a quirky person, but she has her brilliant moments and is remarkably perceptive of the things we wish other people would notice. Unaware of the consequence, Phoebe told Ross in Season 2  her theory about lobster mating. According to her, they mate for life and she knows it because she’d allegedly witnessed old lobster couples holding claws before.

Either way, it seems that this moment was an eye-opener for Ross and the whole “lobster” deal became a recurring adorable synonym for soulmates. No other Friends couple has alternated between breaks and actually being together quite like Ross and Rachel, but ultimately, it was proven that they are indeed lobsters. What bloomed between them in Season 1 has managed to hold up against the obstacles that have been thrown along the way, proving that if two people are each other’s lobsters, their love is going to overcome anything.

The Big Break-Up

Ross and Rachel - Break-Up

It’s an almost guarantee that the question on everyone’s lips ever since Rachel and Ross first gave in to their mutual feelings was “do Ross and Rachel end up together?” It wasn’t a question with an easy answer because there were many elements that kept constantly pulling them apart. From an apparent mismatch of characters to British girlfriends, and to numerous “breaks,” every Rachel and Ross supporter had a rough time believing in the likelihood of a happily ever after.

However, arguably the most difficult moment for the pairing’s supporters was the big break-up in Season 3, the one that was so upsettingly official that nothing beyond that moment has ever been quite the same. Ross found a new girlfriend, he was going to get married to her almost a season and a half a later and basically all arrows pointed towards anything but a Ross and Rachel reconciliation.

The Big Slip

Ross and Rachel - Slip

Season four culminated with a wedding which had Ross as a groom. Unfortunately, it was Emily who was his bride, so we knew we’d have to wait some more if we were to ever see Rachel and Ross married. Friends was airing during a time when big romances were peaking and when scenes of  last-minute wedding crashing were extremely trendy.

I’m sure I speak for all of the viewers when I say that we were eagerly expecting to see something like the latter, especially since Rachel seemed to have flown to London with the full intention to stop the wedding. However, what actually happened was a scene that marked the history of television because it was so unexpected it left us all with our jaws hanging. When reciting his vows to Emily, Ross legendarily switches his soon-to-be wife’s name with Rachel’s, giving us the phenomenal “I, Ross, take thee, Rachel…” line. Unfortunately for Ross, this iconic Freudian slip didn’t get him back together with Rachel and he ended up (understandably) upsetting Emily too. And speaking of which…

The Big Friendship

Ross and Rachel - Friendship

The beauty about these two is that before talking about the “lovers Rachel and Ross,” we’re talking about the “friends Rachel and Ross.” Their romantic adventure has been intensely built up to. After all, remember how satisfied we were when that Ross and Rachel kiss happened? Season 5 is filled with Ross’ attempts to win Emily back and Rachel seems to have fallen out of love herself. With all the romantic complications having been tossed aside, a door to their friendship has been re-opened and viewers got the chance to see a more endearing side of the pairing.

Ross was wholly dedicated to his marriage with Emily and there was no doubt that he wasn’t pursuing a future with her that didn’t involve genuine feelings. However,  push came to shove and Ross was faced to choose between his marriage and the prospect of possibly never seeing Rachel again. The balance leaned in favor of the unbreakable bond of friendship.

The Big Make-Up

Ross and Rachel - Make-Up

Since Ross’ failed wedding at the end of season four, Ross and Rachel have been through a lot. And this time, it wasn’t just your typical “break, together, break, together” phase. They were nothing more than friends for a while, they drunkenly got married in Las Vegas, they remained married for a time, Rachel got pregnant, they had a daughter, and they bonded over their parental responsibilities. However, in all this time, they never actually properly got together in the official sense of the word.

That was until the grand finale of the show rolled in. Rachel was boarded on a plane, ready to fly to her future far away from Ross, who was finally giving it his all to try and win her back. All of the drama and incertitude culminated with an iconic scene where Ross finds a teary-eyed Rachel standing on his threshold. She got off the plane! That was the moment that forever set in stone the fact that Ross and Rachel are, indeed, lobsters.

We can’t possibly know what life Rachel and Ross are living beyond the end of Friends, but we can only assume that, after everything they’ve been through, nothing has been able to separate them again. Ross and Rachel are messy, complicated, and a bit frustrating at times, but this is their charm. It’s what makes them real and perfect for each other.

The Stupid TV Shows That Should Never Have Existed

June 26, 2014 By This Blog Rules Guest Leave a Comment

Is TV the greatest invention ever made by mankind or a hideous curse sent to make us all stupider? If we take a look at some of the most stupid TV shows that ever existed then the answer might seem obvious.

Dallas

Stupid TV Shows

I’m going to try very hard not to mention Booby Ewing coming back to life in the shower. Ok, so maybe not too hard. This show was a lost cause even before the ridiculous resurrection of Bobby but that plot twist remains the single most ridiculous thing to have ever appeared on my TV screen. Apart from that, this was just an everyday show about evil oil barons, rampant shoulder pads and other stuff I can’t remember.

Crossroads

Stupid TV Shows

From a glitzy, dazzling American soap to a humble British one; the only thing these shows have in common is the fact that they are both mind numbingly terrible. Most people’s abiding memory of Crossroads is of the achingly stupid Benny. The rest of the show’s 24-year run was a haze of excruciating dialogue, awful plots and wooden acting. 24 years! How we suffered back in those days.

The Dukes of Hazzard

Stupid TV Shows

I’m sorry. I really am. I know that you loved this show but it was just awful. For a start, it was just the most ridiculously contrived thing ever. If you thought that the Duke Boys’ wacky car stunts were the best thing about it then you are probably right, but only because the rest of it was so bad. Bo and Luke have some sort of fuzzily improbable probation terms that means that they either can’t leave Hazzard Country or else they can leave as long as they come back with a certain number of hours. Can you imagine being trapped in such a terrible place, with unbelievably bungling cops all around you and such frankly dangerous driving conditions on the roads?

Baywatch

Stupid TV Shows

What can I say about Baywatch that hasn’t already been said? Well, I could say that it is a cultural treasure packed with gripping dialogue and almost no gratuitous bikini shots at all. Sadly, I’d be hopelessly wrong. Incredibly, this frankly awful and stupid TV show was once one of the most popular shows in the entire known universe. Try watching an old episode now and see how quickly you lose faith in human intelligence.

Big Brother (and Every Other Reality Show)

Stupid TV Shows

I know that there is a world of lame reality shows out there but I have managed to avoid most of them in a way not unlike the way in which one steers clear of highly contagious diseases. I know, for example, of a simple-minded and desperately shallow family called the Kardashians. I also know that there are reality shows involving singers, people desperate to get married and all sorts of other flotsam and jetsam of televisual nonentities. However, ever since I spent an hour watching the very first series of Big Brother I vowed to avoid reality shows until I draw my last breath.

George & Mildred

Stupid TV Shows

As I grew up in the UK I am as used to pathetic sitcoms as I am to soggy, insipid biscuits and overly milky tea. This means that I could really have chosen any one from a long list of unfunny TV disasters. I only chose this unholy calamity because it was the first name to spring to mind that made me remember long, dark nights watching a TV screen and wondering why I had absolutely no urge to laugh at something that was (at least theoretically) a comedy.

Awesomely Geeky Attire In The Big Bang Theory

August 23, 2012 By This Blog Rules Guest Leave a Comment

The Big Bang Theory is a show that celebrates everything geeky with a smattering of self-effacing humor, inside-jokes and some interesting subversions of nerdy stereotypes. With such a collection of colorful, nerdy characters there’s bound to be a ton of references to comics, movies and other geekery all through the show. This is true even of the wardrobe department, which features a selection of awesome geeky clothing that ranges from the obvious to subtle.

Big Bang Theory Superheros

Sheldon’s Favorite Heroes

Sheldon Flash T-Shirt

Whenever there’s an excuse to dress as The Flash, Sheldon Cooper takes it, and even when there isn’t he’s often seen in a stylish red Flash t-shirt. Maybe it’s the idea of a scientific breakthrough/accident giving someone superpowers that makes this character so appealing, either way the t-shirts are fun and the costumes are just hilarious and it’s hard not to picture him in something without the iconic lightning bolt logo on it.

TBBT Meme

While The Flash seems to have a prominent place in Dr Sheldon Cooper’s wardrobe it’s pretty obvious that he has a thing for the Lantern Corps… Not just the Green Lantern but the ENTIRE Lantern Corps. Sheldon’s been seen in a variety of different shirts featuring the different Lantern groups.

Sheldon Green Lantern

To be honest the idea that he would want to be in the Lantern Corps is kind of scary, for these guys, imagination and conviction are superpowers… Just think about that for a while.

20 of the Internet’s Finest Movie/TV Supercuts

May 4, 2012 By Vernon Gadson 1 Comment

A frequent visitor to the jam-packed corridors of YouTube is an ongoing trend that some people refer to as a “pop culture megamix” and what other, more sensible individuals call a “supercut.” “What is a supercut?” I hear you curiously questioning. Well, a supercut is usually defined as a video montage that exists to highlight and bring attention to an overused plot device or line of dialogue that has at some point or another plagued either television or cinema screens, or sometimes both. The montage typically acts as an overblown compilation of examples of a certain hackneyed movie/TV cliche being used by lazy screenwriters, with mini clips pasted together with monotonous/hilarious repetition. A supercut can also be person-specific (focusing on one actor or filmmaker’s quirks and tropes) or centred on a single TV show or movie.

The trend’s origins can be traced all the way back to 2006, after which it went viral, with hundreds of very imaginative and highly entertaining supercut videos uploaded to YouTube ever since. Below are twenty of the finest, assembled in no particular order. [Read more…]

The Top 10 Reasons You’ll Miss Community

February 3, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Television has grown more and more competitive these days, putting it up to Hollywood to keep their standards high. If you snooze you lose, and right now Hollywood’s threatening to take a long doze into hibernation.

This is due to fantastic shows – Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Wire and The Sopranos – breaking onto the scene in recent years. Sure, HBO dramas are garnering a lot of attention, but do any comedies deserve mention in that same list? Yes, actually. Louie, for one. And Curb Your Enthusiasm. South Park, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Arrested Development. And perhaps my favourite show of them all. Community..

Known for it’s pop culture references and ability to adopt other television shows’ styles and tropes, Community has become a favourite to comedy fans everywhere. After two and a half seasons, however, NBC decided not to include Community in its mid-season line-up, instead opting for the almost-as-funny 30 Rock. The remainder of season three’s episodes will be played after the mid-season line-up, but for now the long-term future of the show is unknown.

We need to save the show. Find out how you can help at the bottom of the page. [Read more…]
