Comical Close-Ups of Ping Pong Players Mid-Match

August 3, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Well, the 2012 Olympics are well underway in London, England. I’m sure you’ve all been glued to your sofas, watching the world’s greatest athletes swim and cycle and sprint and ride and row and shoot and punch and murder (okay, maybe not murder), breaking world records hither and thither, all in the name of bagging a gold, silver or bronze medal for their home country. But hey, how about a bit of a lighthearted break from the heart-racing tension of it all, courtesy of London-based arts site It’s Nice That?

The site, which specialises in showcasing artwork and photography, has published several close-up images of professional ping pong players’ faces mid-match. As you’ll see below, the players display an ever-so-comical expression on their faces that draws a fine line between fierce competitiveness and feckless bewilderment. It’s Nice That is unaware of the origin of the photos, but whoever took them, if you’re out there somewhere, thank you for sharing these with us. [Read more…]

Nail-Bitingly Brilliant Fingernail Art

July 23, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Like so many nervous nellies, 24-year-old Media student Kayleigh O’Connor would routinely chew her fingernails almost to the bone. “I bit [them] so badly that they looked like something out of a horror film,” she says on her DeviantArt page. To compensate, the Birmingham-born nail-biter glues on false nails, but not the kind you can buy at your local pharmacy for $4.50 – they’re ones which Miss O’Connor skillfully sculpts and paints to create ingenious designs. These fingernails, you wouldn’t wanna gnaw at them.

Her designs, which are painstakingly detailed, are inspired by several different sources, from movies to television, music to arcade games, and nature to food. For some time, she would proudly display them in front of only friends and family, but now she photographs them and posts them on her blog for our viewing pleasure. Check out some of O’Connor’s weird and wonderful designs below, where, if you’re cultured enough, you may recognise a few familiar faces. [Read more…]

A World Map Made of 3,000 Coins

June 22, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

“Money makes the world go round,” they say. “Money makes the world, full stop,” would be the reply of Perniclas Bedow, creator of a world of copper, gold and silver coins. Arranged by Swedish design studio Bedow, the piece is a world map made entirely out of over 3,000 coins from around the world: in a stroke of artistic genius, each continent was built using its own currency.

A 2009 project, it was arranged for use by Erik Penser Bankaktiebolag, a Swedish bank. One hopes that the bank’s security guards are keeping a close eye on Bedow’s stunning piece: anyone short on a bus fare may steal a bit of Ohio. Check out images of the project above and below, including some close-ups of the spare-change countries. See if you can spot which part of the world it is. [Read more…]

Euro 2012: Lego Recreations of the Tournament’s Greatest Moments

June 15, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Have you been watching the 2012 European Championships? Yeah, me neither. But hey, this might pique your interest: a teenage football fan from Scotland has celebrated the (apparently very exciting) sports event by recreating some of the most memorable moments from past tournaments – in Lego! 18-year-old Graham Love spent four weeks painstakingly manipulating pint-sized plastic figures to make the stop-motion video, which he uploaded onto YouTube and which has went down a storm.

If you’re a footy fan, you may recognise some of the famous scenes receiving the Lego treatment in Love’s video: Cristiano Ronaldo weeping at Portugal’s Euro 2004 loss, for example, as well as David Trezeguet winning the tournament for France in 2000. He also leaves a question mark open for England’s performance this year. Well, we shall see (I’m sure I’ll read about it somewhere). Below are some screenshots from the video, and right at the bottom is the video itself. Enjoy. [Read more…]

You Are Not Banksy: Street Art Turns Real-Life

June 4, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

You may know of Banksy, a British street artist of unknown identity. Based mostly in England, where he has gained much fame and infamy, Banksy specialises in darkly comic satire, both social and political, which he presents through pieces of graffiti crafted with a technique involving spray paint and stensils. His work, which has appeared on brick walls and the sides of bridges, as well as in his very own public exhibitions, is often deeply subversive and highly comical: a piece depicting a pair of canoodling policemen and another displaying a flower-lobbing hooligan are among his most famous works.

If you enjoy Banksy’s work (if not, seek help), then you may be interested in British photographer Nick Stern’s new series, entitled “You Are Not Banksy.” The project sees Stern meticulously recreating a handful of Banksy’s masterpieces using real-life models and photographing their mimicking poses. The results are extraordinary. Stern himself is a fan of the elusive guerilla street artist: “I have always admired Banksy – I love his cheek and humour,” said the London-born photographer. “Much of art is a recreation or interpretation of real life, but this is the other way round – I wanted real life to recreate art. I hope he likes what I’ve done.”

Below is Stern’s series, along with Banksy’s iconic originals for comparison. [Read more…]
