That’s No Moon… It’s a Ping Pong Ball!

July 2, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

That broken sphere up there, that’s no moon. It’s a Death Star. Or, to be more specific, it’s the incomplete Death Star II, the second iteration of the intergalactic battle station, built by the villainous Galactic Empire after the smaller Death Star I was triumphantly blown to smithereens by Jedi apprentice Luke Skywalker at the end of “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.”

Since it first appeared on cinema screens in 1977, the Death Star has become an iconic image of science-fiction cinema, initially made famous by Alec Guinness’ ominous line, “That’s no moon. It’s a space station.” Well, now it’s about to become that little bit more famous, thanks to Japanese internet user tatumaru5963. Y’see, Mr(s). tatumaru5963 has intricately created his/her own miniature Death Star II, using just a ping pong ball and card stock.

The creator of this mini masterpiece provided some commentary on his/her glorious creation, as reproduced here thanks to the wonders of online translators: “Things repeatedly cutting the ping-pong ball, plastic board was finely cut of 0.2, we reproduce the internal structure.”

Umm, yeah. Check out pictures of the mini Death Star II below. [Read more…]

Star Wars Condoms

April 6, 2012 By Vernon Gadson 1 Comment

Here’s a potentially amusing situation that could backfire like a dodgy blaster gun. Imagine this: your manly/nerdy self has been to a bar, hit on a smokin’ hot chick, wooed the pants off her and driven her back to your place. You guide her to the bedroom, slither under the covers with her and share a hurried and excited disrobing session. She asks if you have protection. “Yes, ma’am,” you reply, being a sensible lad, and reach into your pants pocket for your trusty wallet. You take out your wallet. You reach inside and find a condom. You remove the condom, place down your wallet, turn back to the patiently waiting lady, ready to “suit up,” and are faced with what can only be described as a look of repulsion and horror. Why this look? Because the woman you’ve just picked up, driven to your apartment, taken to your bed, stripped naked and sexually aroused is now looking into the vomit-tainted eyeballs of Jabba the Hutt. Top Five Movie Prequels

August 10, 2011 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

The word “prequel” does not exactly inspire happy thoughts; the world of movies has suffered enough from backstory explanations taking away from the tantalising mysteries that cinematic stories have previously held. They can ruin narratives, wreck deliberate ambiguity and are, for the most part, shoddy and pointless. You only have to look at the drab and boring second “Star Wars” trilogy or the excruciating “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd” to see that prequels can majorly suck anus when handled badly (as they usually are). But when handled with care and attention, they can enlighten a story and give it more weight and meaning, shining a light on the unknown pasts of major plotlines and characters.

Last Friday (August 5) saw Rupert Wyatt’s sci-fi “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” hitting US cinemas, the film serving as an explanation of how the apes, well, rose and sparked “Planet of the Apes” (1968). The film has received quite a bit of critical acclaim, evidently one of the few prequels that have been managed with that care and attention. To mark this, I’ve taken a look at the top five prequels that successfully expand upon the stories of their predecessor(s), instead of inhaling the contents of their forerunners’ bowels. Top Ten Movie Robots

July 4, 2011 By ThisBlogRules 8 Comments

To coincide with the release of the third installment of Michael Bay’s robots-hitting-each-other franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” I have compiled a list of the best robotic characters ever to clink and clang on the silver screen. Some we care for, some we love, some we wish would glitch and malfunction, and some we enjoy watching bash each other to scraps, but the electrically-charged hunks of metal listed below have all developed into iconic pieces of moviedom over the years. Without further ado, here are my top ten robots from the world of cinema. Oh, and no, I’m not going to include Johnny fucking Five in this list; Christ, that pile of scraps is annoying. [Read more…]
