How To Become Iron Man

August 11, 2016 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

Part of the fun of superheroes is that we get to imagine using their powers. Who wouldn’t want to have the ability to shoot spider webbing out of one’s wrists and climb up skyscrapers effortlessly? Who wouldn’t want to be able to fly around with a red cape or wield a mythical hammer that no one else could lift? I can even think of instances when I wouldn’t mind turning into a growling green monster, though I supposed this is a little bit less desirable.

As far as superheroes go it might be hard to think of one that plays with our imaginations more than Iron Man. In part this is because Robert Downey Jr. has brilliantly humanized the role for the better part of a decade now. But it’s also because Iron Man exists as a result of technology that’s starting to seem like it’s not so far-fetched. Tesla mastermind Elon Musk, who’s commonly referred to as the real life Tony Stark (and actually appeared in a Marvel movie, just for fun), keeps teasing the idea that he’s working his own exoskeleton. In other words, the one guy on Earth who seems perfectly capable of creating an Iron Man suit is publicly flirting with the idea, even if he’s probably just joking around. So for the rest of us, it’s impossible not to think about it: what would it take to wear an Iron Man suit one day?

IronMan SuitI have one very clear idea for the first step. Unless you happen to be friends with Elon Musk, or brilliant enough to secure a high-ranking position at one of his companies, you’ll probably need to find a way to acquire incredible wealth. You’ll probably have to win the lottery. Granted, that’s a wee bit of a long shot, but contrary to popular belief, there are actually strategies that can help you to figure out how to win the lottery, or at least how to give yourself a slightly better than average shot. For instance, buying multiple tickets or playing lotteries with statistically greater odds than others can both work in your favor.

The unfortunate thing is that even winning the lottery probably isn’t enough. A little while back, there was a write-up of a detailed account of what it would take to become Iron Man or Batman, strictly from a financial perspective. It’s hard to determine if any of their findings are actually “accurate” given that to some degree this is still a fantasy. But it’s still the closest thing you’ll find to a price tag on an Iron Man suit, and the total is a whopping $1,612,717,000. So you’ll just have to win the lottery and then invest your winnings very successfully. No big deal, right?

From the technological side of things, however, attaining an Iron Man suit might actually be more feasible. A pretty comprehensive report broke down what would need to go into it, and the overall determination was that it’s not entirely beyond the realm of possibility to make an Iron Man-like suit. There would be plenty of tricky challenges, and naturally it wouldn’t come out exactly like the suit we see in the movies, but it’s not so crazy that no one should work on it.

As to how you can actually wind up in an Iron Man suit in another 10 or 20 years, all it takes is a complete shift in your priorities in life. The lottery, or at least a lottery-sized influx of cash, is pretty much a necessity. But beyond that, it’s not about just buying a suit, because none exists. Instead, you’ll want to fund the research and get yourself on a board of directors with some influence on what’s going to happen with human exoskeletons. These things are being explored, and there are people capable of making something close to Iron Man a reality.

You just have to get rich and get to know them!

Top 10 Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween Costumes

September begins and school kids and adults alike skip to planning for the next fun holiday – Halloween.  A quick online glance at the new trends for Halloween costumes indicates that you may well see a good number of last year’s Angry Birds, back again for a repeat (and with a better costume).  Also on the up and coming list, Avengers costumes, Merida (Disney’s Brave), and new additions to the Monster’s High costume selection.

2012 Halloween Costume Trends

Here are our best guesses for what to expect in 2012 Halloween Costume Trends

1.  Dress up as Obama/Romney political posers. Obama Mask

This happens every four years where parents take it upon themselves to dress their kids as a political character in order to “campaign” door to door as they trick or treat.  It can be cute.  Or just weird.  And it can definitely be annoying.  Even if you don’t see many of these political costumes out and about, you’ll notice them for sure, and much like the presidential election, it could be scary.

2.  The Avengers Halloween Costumes.

As mentioned above, this one is just too easy.  Kids will be dressing up as the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and so on and so forth.  Even the women can get in the action with the Avengers Black Widow Costume.  It’s easy. And looks pretty good.

3. Angry Birds Costume.

Last year was for the birds, with a lot of home made Angry Bird costumes, but few in the stores.  This means there may be some latent, repressed birders out there willing to don the costume.  Yellow and red mostly (click here for the Angry Birds Red Costume), and available for boys and girls.

4.  Disney Princess | Disney Brave Merida Costume.

This one never gets old, and this year we have Disney’s Merida the Brave Costume out and about for sale.  Very cute and in a number of sizes.  It would be cute for the big sister, especially if you can convince a few younger siblings to dress up as the bratty bears/brothers.

5. Batman Themed Halloween Costume.

There are likely going to be a number of  Batman Begins Costumes and Catwoman Costumes out and about, especially at the adult parties this year.   Sexy Catwoman costumes abound. . .

6. Dress up as London Olympics Medal Winners.

Options abound as to what you might want to wear – speedos, gymnastics outfits, and tracksuits, are just some of the options.  Throw a handmade gold medal around your neck and your an Olympian.

7. Adult Fifty Shades of Grey Costume.

Dress up as a clueless college student and/or a ruggedly handsome millionaire.   Grab some handcuffs, and you’re fully costumed as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. This one is adult-only.

8. Hunger Games for Halloween.

Put on a frayed black outfit (remember, you’re poor), brown leather jacket and grab a bow and arrow for a prop and you’re all set to be Katniss Everdeen (don’t forget to braid your hair!)

9. Pregnant Snookie Costume

Jersey up your hair, spray on some fake tan, grab a pillow and dress up as a pregnant Snookie.

10. Dress up as Twilight characters Bella/Edward OR Kristen Stewart/Robert Pattinson

Dress up as a, angsty and remorseful Kristen Stewart (all black outfit and sad face)?  Or a pregnant, glowing, Bella.  Even better, you can go as Vampiric Edward or rebound Pattinson.  There must be a Pattinson mask out there somewhere.  Of course, either way, you are only slightly less of a Twihard than the YouTube fan who sobbed out her devastation at Kristen’s cheating ways.

The Top 10 Superhero Movies

April 30, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

In case you didn’t know (and how could you not?), superhero epic “Marvel’s The Avengers” sees its long-awaited theatrical release in American theatres this coming Friday, even though its UK release was last Thursday, when I went and saw it (if you will allow me to gloat and grin and dance merrily down the street for a moment or two). To celebrate, I thought I’d take a look at the ten finest examples to come out of the cinematic superhero genre, which I have listed below along with justifications for each entry. Some of the films are based on comics, some of them are original; some of them are straight-faced, some of them are comedies; some of them are bloody, one of them was made by Pixar. And hey, one of them might even have a certain Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Hulk in them (nudge, nudge). [Read more…]

Minimalist Movie Posters Of Marvel Superheroes

September 26, 2011 By ThisBlogRules Leave a Comment

Ah, who on God’s green earth doesn’t love and adore Marvel Comics. Just think of all the awesome superheroes they launched into mainstream pop culture. We have Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Captain America and Thor among many, many others created by the American comics company since it first cropped up way back in 1939. Recently, graphic designer Marko Manev honored Marvel Comics by designing minimalist posters representing these beloved super-powered crime-fighters we all know, love and wish we could be.

The Evolution of the Superhero Movie

June 30, 2011 By Vernon Gadson 3 Comments

We are currently living in the age of the superhero movie, a financially-friendly genre that is at present flying its way around cinema screens on what is noticeably becoming a regular basis. With the earth-shattering advances in special effects over the past couple of decades, it’s becoming increasingly easy for super-powered vigilantes to make the transition from the pages of a comic book to being projected on the silver screen, which has resulted in a recent explosion of cinematic offerings from the superhero genre. Just this year we’ve already feasted on Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor” and Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class,” and last Friday (June 17) we were presented with Martin Campbell’s “Green Lantern,” which shall be followed by Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” released July 22 in the US. It seems you can’t look at your local cinema listings without seeing someone in a cape or a mask or with their skin a funny colour (no racism intended). But what is the history of this genre? Where did it all begin? When did it really become popular? And what is with our current fascination with crime-fighters who have awesome, otherworldly powers?
