WWI Romanian Photos Restored And Brought To Life

August 12, 2015 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

We’ve enjoyed the privilege of taking photographs for around two hundred years, and during a big chunk of this period, we could only immortalize black and white moments, black and white weddings, black and white portraits. Thankfully, Photoshop enthusiasts from all over the world took on the daunting job of colorizing photos that date back from World War II and even World War I. And it’s no easy job. It takes hours of patience, and mastering Photoshop is essential. You can recognize the colors in a black and white picture by the subtle grey hues and from there on it’s all about the artists’ dedication to build a new photo that will faithfully illustrate what colored life looked in the 20s. An Australian artist put her personal spin on colorizing. When she saw a Romanian photographers’s collection of old glass plate pictures, she figured she could bring them back to life. With a twist. Check out this WWI Romanian photos restored and brought to life by Jane Long.

Jane Long’s colorizing process mainly involved guesswork. The rest of the imaginative process involved some kickass Photoshop skills, a fairy tale perspective and a whole lot of creativity. In this set, Long took a picture of a little boy and a girl, possibly brother and sister, and not only brought it to life with colors, but put her fingerprint on it in a fairy tale meets scary stories kind of way.

This photo dating from the first World War was taken in someone’s garden and captured a very serious young man holding two pigeons. Long thought the picture didn’t have enough birds in it, so she added about a dozen more. The young man is brought to life by the vivid coloring, though he’s still not smiling. While the picture on the left tells a nostalgic story of long gone times, the one on the right mixes historic photography with Daliesque surrealism.

Classic WWI children portraits included dressed up kids often resembling cute chubby dolls. While the little girl on the left looks startled, and the little boy puts on a wise pose, the photo on the right tells a whole different story. The mirror is a unique touch and illustrates Long’s Photoshop skills at their best. Her attention to details is also amazing. Notice the little boy’s blue eyes, his tiny hand resting on the girl’s back and the perfect aged reflection in the mirror.

While on the left we have the classic Romanian wedding at the beginning twentieth century, Jane took a different approach with her digital manipulation. The bride of the sea has other guests than her Romanian black and white equivalent. Her beautiful dress took a lot of careful work and the flower bouquet benefited from an augmentation. The fairy tale element in this one is brought by the floating veil and her almost unnoticeable aqua blue eyes.

Probably a mother and her son showing off their acrobatic skills, the photo on the left captured a unique family moment during the years of the first World War. Continuing the theme, the Australian photographer took to her editing master skills and transformed the photo into an image saturated with color and fun. Notice the woman flipping a pancake and the little boy holding his teacup, while they’re both standing on a teapot resting on the laundry wire. Which is basically the definition of a fun Sunday in the family.

Combining several soldiers’ portraits, Long added a touch of grace to her take on the photo by beautifying it with poppies. The portraits on the left are harsh and cold not only because they are in black and white. The uniforms of the soldiers and officers are brought to life in a colorizing process that must have taken hours, if not days.

Celebrities As Average People

May 31, 2014 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

People have a peculiar fascination with celebrities. They’re viewed as powerful, glamorous and beautiful. We see them on the cover of fashion magazines, in movies, and on TV where they exude confidence, style and wealth. But of course that’s just a front. They’re just normal people, aren’t they? Normal rich people who are known by millions of people.

A British artist named Danny Evans has come up with a way that will make us view celebrities in a whole different light. With the use of Photoshop, he has taken some of the most famous and well-known celebrities of today and has transformed them into average looking people. Imagine Jennifer Aniston as an overweight cashier lady. Pretty hard, isn’t it?

In the wrong hands, Photoshop can really be a tool for disaster. Photoshop mistakes are more common than we would have liked them to be, but fortunately it is quite the opposite in Danny Evans’ case. He is a Photoshop master! He said he was inspired to create these images of celebrities as average people by the already Photoshopped images of celebrities that seem to be everywhere we look:

“It was a reaction to the insanely over-retouched photos of celebrities that are everywhere.”

He started creating the first images of celebrities as average people in 2006. Now, he just released some more funny Photoshopped celebs pictures for the world to enjoy. So, without further ado, this is what happens when celebrities become average people:

Tom Cruise is a 40-year old unemployed dude who still lives in his parents’ basement and plays video games all day long.Tom cruise celebrities as average people

If you take away the hair, there really isn’t much of a difference between how Miley Cyrus looks today and this 80’s Miley.miley cyrus celebrities as average people

Madonna, the lady; the 80’s lady with aging Farrah Fawcett hair.madonna 2 celebrities as average people

Another Madonna, this time looking freakishly like my aunt Mildred at her school’s 50th reunion.madonna celebrities as average people

Just look at them. Even when they are average people, Kristen and Rob can’t seem to leave their brooding aside.kristen and rob celebrities as average people

I honestly believe that if Kim and Kanye weren’t famous this would be exactly how they would look like: Kim as a hefty beautician and Kanye as an even heftier furniture delivery guy.kim kardashian kanye west celebrities as average people

The Kardashians are just amazing in this picture! Just look at Khloe and how much she fits her role! Kourtney’s smile say it all and Kris still looks like the Pimp Mama she is.kardashian family celebrities as average people

This one’s an oldie, but a goldie. It’s still Johnny Depp, only with a few extra pounds. But deep down inside, this is still Johnny and how he would look had he not found fame.johnny depp celebrities as average people

The perfect accountant, Jennifer Lopez in her marvelous velour sweater is excited about doing your numbers. Velour sweaters should really be banned, shouldn’t they?jennifer lopez celebrities as average people

Here she is, a disheveled Jennifer Aniston looking straight into the soul of the beef jerky hanging on the shelf at the convenient store where she’s working as a cashier.jennifer aniston celebrities as average people

I think if Posh saw this image she would get a panic attack. She’s so plump and fluffy and David looks all teeth!david and victoria beckham celebrities as average people

The most glorious photo manipulation of all times, this one is truly a masterpiece. Notice how worried they both look. It’s as if they have a ton of children back home to look after and no hired help to do it!angelina jolie brad pitt celebrities as average people

10 Examples of Worst Photoshop Mistakes of All Time

April 18, 2014 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

We’ve all become accustomed to Photoshop as being a necessary evil: a tool that adjusts images we see everywhere to make them better or more suitable to the message they carry. Yes, it falsifies things up to a point, but it can also create breath-taking beautiful effects by manipulating reality into impossible-looking artful results. There’s no denying the advantages of photoshopping and image manipulation, but sometimes the job done is so sloppy that the results achieved are beyond hilarious. Some aren’t just hilarious, but are also upsetting to viewers, when they feature unrealistic body images that promote sexism or unhealthy expectations. Here’s a list of 30 worst Photoshop mistakes of all time.

1. Veronica Kay’s missing leg. No, Stuff magazine didn’t attempt an up-worthy photo-shoot with a one-legged model. The flaw is instead a courtesy of the magazine’s design team. We’re sorry, Stuff: as Veronica is indeed lovely, the missing leg is not.

1

2. Emma Watson’s turn to lose a leg. In this Burberry ad, it’s suddenly not clear if the beautiful Emma Watson is holding a hand around her brother Alex because she’s affectionate, or because she needs the extra support due to losing a leg. Yes, it’s a bad joke, but the real joke is the campaign’s overeager Photoshop team.

2

3. A different kind of mistake: treating beautiful people as not good enough. Case in point: Beyonce. More than one time, the singer was involved in a controversy and litigious conflict with magazines that photshopped her skin tone to make it appear lighter than it actually is. Apparently you can make it as a woman of color, but only as long as you allow the image designers to tone your racial traits down a little, eh?

3

4. Another big boogie man of the beauty industry: curves. Sure, curves are supposedly nice in our post-Jennifer Lopez era, but that doesn’t mean real curvy bodies shouldn’t get a good dose of Photoshop treatment, apparently. On example is Kim Kardashian: after a magazine’s team is done with processing her original photos, even the much coveted curves are airbrushed into something more palatable for the industry’s standards.

4

5. Men aren’t exempt from this either. A similar slap in the face was achieved when the people from Lancome apparently though that Clive Owen could use a little nip and tuck to look acceptable enough for the campaign’s poster. Nothing that a little Photoshop can’t fix, right?

5

6. Bigger boobs don’t hurt either. Adriana Lima is a Victoria’s secret model deemed by many people perfect, but that hasn’t stopped some Photoshop expert from adorning her with a bigger pair of breasts. Such low blows constantly outrage journalists and bloggers everywhere, but it doesn’t seem to stop the industry from doing it again all the time.

6

7. To move on to actual mistakes in using the program’s features and functions, one classic fail is the overlapping text. Take the example below, where the text advertising the milk bar is printed both on the T-shirt and the model’s hand. Someone got lazy, it seems.

7

8. Multiple hands. If one of the worst Photoshop mistakes is chopping off a leg, we shouldn’t forget the adding of hands, either. Check out the dreamy scene with the three-handed princess. A lovely job, right?

8

9. Beyond sloppy erasing. This is what happens when one trigger-happy Photoshop expert wants to clear as much as possible from the background before putting the person onto a new background. Heads may as well roll since they’re being carved into.

9

10. The case of phantom hands. Another classic fail among the worst Photoshop mistakes possible is the hand of an absent person persisting in the image after its original owner was airbrushed away. The examples of this are bountiful, but we’ve pictured this one because – oh, the irony – the image was supposed to be an advertisement for “professional quality photos”. Cheers to that.

Street Stone: Classic Sculptures in Modern-Day Clothing

August 20, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

It’s a comical clash of classic and modern style in Street Stone, the rib-tickling new art project from Léo Caillard. In a stroke of artistic genius, the French photographer felt it necessary to bring a little modern flair to the sculptured masterpieces standing and lounging in the Louvre. In Street Stone, centuries-old statues are glammed up with the fashion of today. The inspired juxtapositions are hysterical and provoke a thought or two about the startling changes in fashion sensibilities over time. But how did Caillard do it?

In the video below, his method is shown: Caillard took some snaps of the statues, then took snaps of his friends dressed in trendy attire (plaid shirts, cropped pants, etc.) and mimicking the poses of the classic stone figures. With a little bit of photo manipulation thanks to the powers of Photoshop and some help from art director Alexis Persani, the clothes of the friends were seamlessly placed onto the stone figures’ bodies. And voila: hipster statues!

Check out the rest of Street Stone below.
