Top 10 American Presidents Ranked By Popularity

November 11, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

Being the most powerful man in the world is a tormenting job. One may say that with great power comes great responsibility even. Based purely on their approval rating and their popularity with the masses, how are the American presidents ranked? Read below to find out if your favorite is on this list.

Using data collected from Real Clear Politics and the Roper Center, we can now contour an approximate ranking for our presidents, past and present. We should make the mention that most of this data has become available in the past few decades, so some of the more obvious choices might be missing for this reason alone. Let’s get started.

#10 Barack Obama

President Barack Obama

Source

  • 44th President
  • Average Approval Rating: 47.46%

Obama had to take the mantle of President under some really dire circumstances. It was the peak of the financial crisis and the USA had troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Despite all of that, Obama walked into the White House with an impressive approval rating. It dropped considerably around 2013 and started picking up again now when his term is coming to an end.

#9 George W. Bush

  • 43rd President
  • Average Approval Rating: 47.48%

After the dreadful 9/11 bombing, Bush’s popularity leaped, only for it to completely plummet in the months that followed after. Bush had to struggle with the intense warring issues and the Great Recession during his term and this took a considerable toll on his popularity.

#8 Richard Nixon

  • 37th President
  • Average Approval Rating: 49.89%

Nixon is a pretty interesting case of study. He entered presidency with a fairly high approval rating and throughout most of his term he really had the people on his side. Things took a violent turn for the worst after the Watergate Scandal broke out, leading to Nixon having the lowest exit approval rating of all presidents ranked on this list.

#7 Ronald Reagan

President Ronald Reagan

Source

  • 40th President
  • Average Approval Rating: 52.84%

Reagan may only be seventh among all the presidents ranked by popularity, but his actual tenure is regarded as one of the best in US history. In fact, his popularity only dropped sometime in the 80s during a strong economic recession.

#6 Lyndon B. Johnson

  • 36th President
  • Average Approval Rating: 54.75%

Johnson had to relocate to the Oval Office after JFK’s tragic death and this in itself warranted a lot of civil popularity and sympathy. His popularity started declining once the Vietnam War and the civil unrest in America started acting up.

#5 Bill Clinton

  • 42nd President
  • Average Approval Rating: 54.8%

Clinton is a special case even among all of these presidents ranked by popularity. He’s one of the few situations where he left with a higher popularity than the one he’d started off his term on. Admittedly, it took a toll during his infamous scandals, but the fact still stands.

#4 George H.W. Bush

President George H.W. Bush

Source

  • 41st President
  • Average Approval Rating: 60.1%

Bush was largely supported by the American public for his strong foreign policies. Militating for the end of the Cold War sat well with the population and, thus, Bush is the first among these presidents ranked to break the 60% approval rating.

#3 Franklin D. Roosevelt

  • 32nd President
  • Average Approval Rating: 64.49%

Roosevelt had a very difficult time during his term. He had to guide America through the Great Depression and World War II, yet he seemed to have succeeded. Out of his 12 years served as head of the country, only 7 of them were monitored for approval rating. It never dropped below 50%.

#2 Dwight D. Eisenhower

  • 34th President
  • Average Approval Rating: 64.9%

Eisenhower had one of the most stable approval rating average out of the presidents ranked on this list. His popularity was considerably higher during the first term, but at the end of the day he has almost as many people supporting him when he left as he did when he had stepped into the role.

#1 John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy Tops The Presidents Ranked List

Source

  • 35th President
  • Average Approval Rating: 70.53%

During a mere 2 years at the White House, Kennedy managed to use his charisma, wits, and visionary ways to win a great portion of the population to his side. Needless to say, today, his popularity would be even bigger given his tragic end.

Things to Know about Russia’s President Vladimir Putin

February 11, 2015 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

Things are starting to get a little heated up with the whole Russia invading Crimea and wanting Ukraine but what else is there to know about Russia’s President Vladimir Putin?

Here are 8 facts you probably did not know about Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, featuring small bits of his past and present.

There are not many good things one can say about a leader who tries by any means to accomplish everything he wants, but what if there is more there than meets the eye? In no way is this article about criticizing or praising the Russian leader, it is only a way of making you know a bit more about the man who has been around in the news lately.

1. George W. Bush made a comment about Vladimir Putin

gty_vladimir_putin_george_w_bush_jc_140721_16x9_608

I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul; a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country.

This is a comment Bush made about Putin. Soon after, the Russian President commented about Bush’s dog on how it was too small for being considered an actual dog. Heartwarming, huh?

2. LeningradRIAN_archive_324_In_besieged_Leningrad

??????? ????????

He wasborn in Leningrad in 1952 as the son of Maria and Vladimir. Maria Ivanovna, his mother survived the Siege of Leningrad between  1941 and 1944, when German and Finnish troops cut off all of the supplies which were set to arrive in the city of Leningrad, Russia.

3. He’s a sports person

0826-PUTIN-Judo_full_600

Don’t think of Putin as a person who considers attacking other countries as a sport (although he might, who knows?), he actually used to be into boxing, judo and karate. He started taking lesson when he was 12 even though these violent sports where not exactly on his mother’s taste.

4. He announced his divorce on Russian Television

Vladimir Putin, Lyudmila Putin

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin announced during a live broadcast that he and his wife Lyudmila were going to divorce, back in 2014. The couple were married for almost 30 years and the reason behind the divorce seems to be the fact that both of them had busy lives and couldn’t see each other as often anymore.

5. Putin is a father

1406273643933_wps_1_Maria_Putin_Father_Mother

Vladimir Putin and his now ex-wife Lyudmila have two daughters together, Maria and Yekaterina. Although both of his daughters are now almost 30 years old, almost no one in Russia or outside it knows who they are or how they look like. It is said that Russians respect the privacy of their leader very much and do not want to interfere in it.

6. He is fluent in German

Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin spent 5 years in the German city of Dresden while working for the secret Russian intelligence agency, KGB. After the Berlin Wall fell, he was deployed back in Russia but his German remained clear as day.

7. Vladimir Putin is the most powerful person in the world, according to Forbes

670px-vladimir_putin_official_portrait

Vladimir Putin was named the most powerful man alive by Forbes while US president Barack Obama came second. Although this “assumption” caused a lot of controversy back in November when it was first published, you can see why Forbes chose Putin over Obama.

Vladimir Putin has been Russia’s leader for almost 15 years and in 2014 he not only figured out a way to annex Crimea and start a civil war in Ukraine but he also managed to land a $70 billion worth deal with China by constructing the world’s largest gas pipeline.

8. Putin is a manipulator

putin-in-the-kgb

During the years he spent as a KGB agent, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin was known to be a people manipulator who was actually very good at what he was doing. Given the fact that he spent quite some time undercover and no one figured it out, that sure counts as impressive.

Although Vladimir Putin has gotten closer now than ever on starting the next World War, his decisions are almost never done out of impulse. He is strategic and meticulous and always thinks a lot on his next move. These are only a couple of reasons why the world should start acknowledging his existence if they have not done so yet.

Three Signs that World Peace is in Danger

March 13, 2014 By Theresa Carrion 2 Comments

World Peace is in Danger

A lot of strange things have been happening lately, especially things that concern the entire populace. The problem is that confusion and misinformation fueled by the press’s manipulation and political coverups have lead to a general sense of paranoia among normal people. The fear of war, and oppression fester and grow in the minds of the misguided, who believe that an impending doom is lurking for them in the shadows.

In addition to all this commotion, TV shows are always coming up with conspiracy theories that do nothing more than to further agitate the populace. Although we are not claiming that a next World War will erupt any time soon, the current state of the world is showing some eerie similarities with other pre-World War pictures, and we know how history likes to repeat itself. Let’s take a look at the three signs that tell us how World Peace is in danger:

1. The Dire Situation in Ukraine – Russia’s Invasion

World Peace is in Danger

You have probably heard that on February 27, 2014, Russian soldiers started to move towards Crimea, and took several of its airports. As a matter of fact, 6000 Russian troops were deployed to the peninsula, and started to forcibly take control of communication centers, government buildings and military bases. But this isn’t the first power play that Russia has displayed in regards to Ukraine, nor is it the first disturbing event to occur in Ukraine in the past few weeks.

Ukraine and Russia have argued over the Crimea peninsula for over 300 years, and it seems that the populace is split into to: the Russia sympathizing part, and the nationalist party. At the moment, the country’s politics are in tatters, and decisions taken by Russia seem to affect the whole of Europe. In the map above you will see how clearly the supporters of Russia and Ukraine are divided (Blue is for pro-Russian supporters, and purple is for Yulia Tymoshenko’s supporters.

World Peace is in Danger

Ukraine is being invaded, and nobody is doing anything to stop it. Although the UN, NATO and the US have all issued warnings that any act of aggresion against Crimea will be considered an act of aggression against the whole world, this has not stopped Russia from talking control of Crimea. The truth is that nothing can be done, unless a game of nuclear Russian roulette will start, and nobody wants that. Although Ukraine may not light the match for the third World War, it reassures Russia, once again, that it can do whatever the f&#k it wants, and not be punished. A similar situation occurred in 2008, when Russia decided to throw some bombs over the Georgian Capital. Humanitarian groups cried out, governments issued threats, but in the end, nobody liftd a finger.

2. Iran is Itching for War

Tensions seem to be arising in every corner of the world, and the middle East is no exception. Whether or not Iran is a threat, we may not yet know, but it is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Apparently, earlier this year, Iran dispatched a fleet of ships towards US national waters. Soon after, on February 12, 2014, Iran’s military adviser stated that the country is prepared to go toe-to-toe on land or sea, with America.

World Peace is in Danger

In addition to this, Iran says they have 13.6 million people who can pick up their guns at a moment’s notice, which seems like a formidable number. Although this news sounds a bit disturbing, it should not worry us very much because most of the impending wars will probably be held in air, and Iran has an air force of 30.000 men with several hundred aircrafts and cruise missiles. In addition to this, although the country has issued a threat to America, they have done so repeatedly in the past, and nothing happened.

3. The Global Recession

Every war is different, but no matter the reasons for starting, one factor is usually the same: prior to each war, economic recessions hit several of the countries that participated. Financial analyists predict yet another economic meltdown for Western Countries, and more and more countries like Iran and Russia are banding together for mutual benefices. But these are the least of the World’s problems. At the moment, the US government has approximately 17$ trillion in debt, and china ons seven percent of that. China has also become the second largest economy in the world, and if it decides, at some point, to dump the US debt, it will definitely cripple the US economy (and of the world) in no time.

World Peace is in Danger

There are other problems happening in the Global landscape that we should be aware of. One of them is related to the Senkaku Island Dispute, which is basically a rock formation in the East China Sea. Whoever controls it, will control all shipping lanes, fishing waters and potential oil fields. China has also decided to attest its air control over a newly configured air defense zone, in the vicinity of Senkaku Island. All in all, different countries are playing with fire, to see how much they can do without getting burned. All we know is that there are several signals that the World peace is in danger. We can only hope that issues will be resolved peacefully in the end.

You Are Not Banksy: Street Art Turns Real-Life

June 4, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

You may know of Banksy, a British street artist of unknown identity. Based mostly in England, where he has gained much fame and infamy, Banksy specialises in darkly comic satire, both social and political, which he presents through pieces of graffiti crafted with a technique involving spray paint and stensils. His work, which has appeared on brick walls and the sides of bridges, as well as in his very own public exhibitions, is often deeply subversive and highly comical: a piece depicting a pair of canoodling policemen and another displaying a flower-lobbing hooligan are among his most famous works.

If you enjoy Banksy’s work (if not, seek help), then you may be interested in British photographer Nick Stern’s new series, entitled “You Are Not Banksy.” The project sees Stern meticulously recreating a handful of Banksy’s masterpieces using real-life models and photographing their mimicking poses. The results are extraordinary. Stern himself is a fan of the elusive guerilla street artist: “I have always admired Banksy – I love his cheek and humour,” said the London-born photographer. “Much of art is a recreation or interpretation of real life, but this is the other way round – I wanted real life to recreate art. I hope he likes what I’ve done.”

Below is Stern’s series, along with Banksy’s iconic originals for comparison. [Read more…]
